gear reduction starter can be had from georg for ~$50+shipping

My starter is on the fritz. About 30 percent of the time it wont turn over so I open hood and tap on the starter with a hammer and it starts right up. Is there something I can do to that starter like clean it or should I just buy a new one?

I put a GR starter from a 60 series in it, replacing the original......check the folder for a receipt on it......autozone should replace it I believe.

The 60 series starter (probably all of them for that matter) is EASILY rebuildable. It takes longer to pull and replace than to rebuild it.

Rebuilding consists of putting in some new contacts and a plunger, which are readily available from your favorite OEM parts vendors.

15w40 diesel oil is what I have run for a while. 20w50 is fine

I've got an email from castrol telling me their oil doesn't have enough zddp for flat tappet engines and they don't recommend it for a 2F. It's not going to grenade your cam but will increase wear over time

Mobil 15w-50 has adequate amounts.. most diesel oils seem too have higher levels of zddp too
