JCWhitney is calling and emailing people with info that they are canceling orders. I tried to buy one for the 9.5" FF 80 rear I have. No dice :frown:

Myke, have Chris Welch build the cage. Sell the MT stuff you have, and let him work some magic. Better than hobbling two different cages together.

JC whitney needs to honor there advertised price!

worth getting a price on a person/company to build you a cage, Mike. Couldn't hurt. you may be able to sell the MT cage and recover your cost of having one built for ya.

CLC, I'm in the process of building a tailgate for the GunRunner. The lower barn doors I have been running for the last couple of years are for sale. Mounting the early lower half doors to a later ambulance door tub is hard to do. They rattled too much for my liking and I have never had, but always wanted a tailgate. I bought these doors from Marks Off-road in the exact condition they are in in the pics. I did not paint the doors. I did make a modified catch from aluminum which allowed me to mount the doors farther apart than they would be on an early tub. I have an original catch that will be included. These doors are usually Swiss cheese along the bottoms but these are west coast doors and are in very good condition with minor surface rust. I was told and firmly believe they have no bondo. They do have multiple layers of paint and plenty of scratches. I highly recommend blasting/stripping and new paint. $300 to CLC members, which is exactly what I paid.

New tailgate in process...

It's a salvage sheet of 3/8 aluminum, 40 door hinges, and early 40 windshield to cowl latches. Thinking of using a slightly larger sheet of 1/8 aluminum as a skin to help cover the gaps around the edge. I have some junkyard cables and will need to fab catches on each side.

Tailgate support cables from a 1990ish s10 blazer (pickup) work well - meaning they can support me sitting on it.

EDIT: actually, you DO NOT want the pickup cable, you want the one from the S10 full body (sorry for the mistake - geez, it was only a half a year ago, and I can't even remember anymore which one the incorrect one was that I had to send back )

Tools R Us made step/adaptor washers to space them properly from the body, but normal washers would work, too (more pics on washer/spacing detail here https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=8825434&postcount=501).

I am still missing weather stripping on the tailgate (will go on after painting), but it doesn't even rattle now

Thanks for the info. Need to get some of these for my tailgate!

Well documented recommendation! I like pictures!

But if you know me then it won't be a surprise that I already have a nice pair of tailgate cables from a junk yard Range Rover. It was the only part worth picking!

Anyone ever install a harness plug for the wiper wiring where the windshield frame meets the cowl? I'd like to make it much easier to fully remove the windshield when wheeling. The inside of my windshield gets absolutely nasty during the Crawl while laying down on the hood. It also limits visibility at the right front corner. In the event of a flop (please no, not again) it also eliminates the potential for damage to expensive, hard to find parts. I guess I'm looking for a plug to splice into the 4-wire harness. It will need to fit down into the hole in the top of the Cowl that is around 1.25". A Toyota 4-wire plug from an FJ62 is too big. Thanks for the input.

On mine (assuming yours is similar) the wires from the wiper motor extend through and terminate at two connectors on the left side of the glove box:

The harness drops down right there with two mating plugs:

Why not cut the plugs off each end, splice the wiper motor wires into the harness wires right there at the harness, and resplice the plugs at the top of the cowl or inside the windshield frame... essentially just make the harness side the long end and the motor side the short end of the connection?

Wow JT! Great info with pics!

Let me see how hard it will be to use the OEM plugs.

Thanks for posting.

How is the Tailgate a coming, Lash?
Lemme know if ya need a hand..

WCT or DSRTRIDR,
Can one of you give me a measurement on the S10 cable? The RR cables I picked are too short.
Thanks

Hinges are mostly done. I will need to adjust the spacing between the sill and hinge so the tailgate is at the correct depth in the tub.
I started the catch plates. They still need the catch hook welded on and the latches bolted to the tailgate. Then mount the cables. Once it's all fabbed, it gets torn down, wire wheeled, painted and reassembled.

About 17 3/8", from a S10 Blazer (actually specifically NOT the pickup, sorry for the earlier mistake, I have corrected it - the pickup cable has an ugly angle catch to it).

for the catches on the tailgate, we used what the OEM tailgate came with, but turned them around; and new holes were drilled in the quarter panel posts to mount the cables - if you make your own catches, length of the cable would dictate where you drill the holes

the hooks on the quarter panels were custom fabricated, since the OEM tailgate hooks would not line up with the captive nut holes in the quarter panel and the tailgate handles at the same time - looks like your captive nuts are in a lower position than on my '72 tub
