Ok, here’s what’s up, or what I was told. The original owner was in CO, then bought and brought to Prescott AZ, where the current owner bout it and owned it. He just moved here a few months ago and brought the cruiser a little bit after. He bought it as a fixer upper and has been trying to “restore” it.

Now the vehicle, it is a 69 with 73 top, sides, doors and seats. I can’t find any rust, and there is only 2-3 spots of bondo; the passenger fender (not rust, a dent fill, I looked underneath. Solid) the driver ambulance door (was told it was a dent) that’s it that I could definitely see. All the doors where hard to close, but he had replaced the seals himself. He had to re wire the gauges since they where cut prior. The exhaust was replaced but won’t fit the skid please now. It has a full role cage. All the knobs that are installed work, the heater works, 4wd works sometimes (the vaccine leak). The engine was rebuilt 5-7 years ago he says, but occasionally leaks at the transfer case. The fuel pump hase a vapor lock problem, so he has wired in a new aftermarket one under the seat. The winch controller is under the hood. He doesn’t know if there was an accident or now for the hood being a bit off, but it didn’t appear screwed up. There is a little gap on the passenger side fender. That’s all I can think of. It looks like it’s salvageable. It just needs a little love.

Man you guys are tough. My poor truck is worth about....nothing. A lot of the "hacks" everyone points out matter to someone who wants to go "stock resto" but not to folks who want a working cruiser. Whether or not there are two holes cut in the dash that are not stock is really not a big deal and not minus $500 to the average Joe (I know it's a joke, but still...). It's also called "character" to some of us. Like the scars and wrinkles we all get as we age. They tell stories. Some Good Stuff in the steering column hole? Who cares? Take it out if you don't like it. What is the end goal for the cruiser? I don't know that it's worth 10k....here, I'll post one far far worse from my neck of the woods. They are asking 15k.... Now that's a joke. It DOES have a pinstripe. 1978 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER FJ40

I agree. The price of cruisers is high for junk, no one sells a cruiser for what you think it’s worth back in the day. Today there is a demand. Sadly this is one of the better I’ve seen yet.. anything under 10,000 seems to be a rolling chassis, or so full of rust. It’s getting harder to find a good base for a fixer upper, let alone a restore, unless you pay 15,000 and up..... way up....

You may find a lot of folks are asking 10k for junk because they see other junk posted for as much. Has any of it sold for that much?... I hope not

I’ll add some positivity though - I bought my cruiser for 10k and would be scared to post it up for all to see like you have done. Holes in the fenders and floors, engine swap, none US (gasp!) ... but there are positives to every pile o junk and I wouldn’t trade it for anybody’s ‘perfect’ resto now that it’s become mine.

Is this one a 10k truck? I don’t think so, but you may be surprised what his actual price is. A year ago I was like you and scared I couldn’t get a decent runner for my budget, now I have one I take on 600 mile trips regularly. People here are critical because they are burdened by knowing too much about these trucks. Use that, but use your gut too; if you want a beater thats OK. Some folks here can’t get past the idea that not every truck has to be a resto candidate :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Edit: there are a few good looking trucks in the same price range up my way - a road trip from AZ up through Utah is quite nice in the fall :D

If you some then I’m sure I’d love a drive.

I
I’m just trying to get some opinions, not step on toes or anything. It’s a fixer upper for sure. Just how much I’ll find out when I look at it.

I have 2 fj40’s for sale in the classifieds here in much better shape. One im asking only $2k more than that. The other is an patina ride at $15k OBO. All the parts on them are correct for the years. Both run and drive. I’m about 4-5 hours from Phoenix. In Las Cruces NM

If they don’t interest you that’s fine. Just don’t buy that pile unless he’ll sell it for $5k or less. Or just keep looking. There’s a better one out there.

Here’s mine.

what better to use than spray foam as firewall insulation around the steering column :hillbilly:

Spray foam insulation:yuck:.....The last PO for my 40 used that in the floor behind the tranny hump to cover a rusted areas. Then he painted it. Reminds me of a fellow in the next town over. Bought a '71 for $3500 then started to disassemble it. Still in pieces 6 years later, hasn't been started in that time, offered him $5000 he countered with $10,000 saying he "knows what they are worth".

I agree with everyone, this is not a $10k cruiser. From what you say, the body seems decent but it needs basically a completel mechanical/electrical overhaul.

I’d want to see compression test numbers at that price to prove the engine was rebuilt.

It all depends on what you want from it. I think saying it’s “junk” might be a bit hypercritical unless you’re looking to do a 100% stock restoration. If you’re looking for a fun cruiser, this one might have good bones. A lot of the important stuff is there to make a fun (but not stock) FJ40, but most of the mechanical parts are shot, bypassed, and jerry rigged to make it “run” and the price doesn’t reflect that. I wouldn’t pay $10,000 for a basket case.

You’re also in AZ, so rust-free rigs are everywhere. On the east coast that guy might actually get close to what he’s asking based just on the fact that it isn’t Swiss cheese. I paid too much for my frankencruiser for just that reason, but I still didn’t pay $10k.

I agree. I may wait for a decent 2F candidate. But I am a fan of the ambulance doors. As for @RWBeringer4x4 comment, there all getting bought up if they are decent. I have seen quite a few in other states that say they where found in Arizona. I’ve been told to start looking north, reflecting @John in Utah coment.

That's not a 73 hardtop (74 to 76 IIRC) and the rear sill has been "fixed" a bit.
