.
Everyone on here that has the rare and ultimate 3FE equipped 80 post here, and don't forget to mention any 3FE specific junk you've done!

Hopefully this will make it easier to find other 3FE owners to ask for help, etc. when that rare problem arises!

RE-Edit: aw hell, chat away, just give me enough info to compile it to a "database" type arrangement so that I can make a thread with everyone who has done what and who just owns the beastiest 80's

Vehicle: 1991 and 1992 FJ80's

Location: South Central North Carolina (Right near Uwharrie Nat'l Forrest)

3FE Junk: 1) Custom 2.5" Exhaust (pics to come)
2) De-smog (in progress, write-up to come)

3FE Issues: Coolant Loss (plastic tank crack, suspected rear heater and engine bay by-pass hoses)
you want the info here? I have a 91 & 92 3FE. This is the second 92. I bought this one at salvage auction for parts. The 91 has front body damage when some idiot locked em up on the main road into town. I had 3 maybe 4 seconds to stop. '91 Cruisey just too heavy wouldn't do it. I wasn't wearing a seat belt and didn't even slide forward. The 92 has severe rear end issues. looks like the guy backed into something low going hard. It has 1.135 MILLION miles on it. That tells you how great these beasts are. It still starts right up and actually runs, just not straight.

Hi Everyone - hoping to get some insights from the community on this one as I'm currently scratching my head. I have a 1991 3FE, 289k miles, drive it daily with no issues for the most part. Ignition wires/plugs/rotor/injectors (not cold start) have all been replaced. Every couple of months I get a crank with no start, leave the truck for a few hours, come back and it starts with smoke then runs fine. Tends to run a bit rich but I assume this is likely case for many of us with the 3FE. Leaning toward leaking cold injector but wanted to get some thoughts before I start replacing parts. Thanks in advance!

you may be on the right path, when was the last time the fusible link was replaced

Question for the masses, so this year I'm getting the OG engine for my 91 rebuilt (244,000 miles) would it be wise to get the transmission and transfer case rebuilt at the same time. I found a shop that can rebuilt both transmission and transfer case for like $4,500. Just wanting some input as people always say the transmission is "bullet proof"

Thanks

No, I would not rebuild the A440F unless you ran out of options on sourcing a used one.

Do you get any codes w/ the no-start condition?

Hey guys! I’m in the process of deleting the egr in my 91 with the 3fe. My question is do you need to keep any of the connectors for the VSV? I’m talking about the brown, blue, grey ones in the pic?

I think your best bet is to go to the emissions section of your 3FE FSM and see what those VSVs are use for.

if you check my build thread you can see where i mounted mine

I am running 37s, 488 gear on the third, 10% underdrive on high and lo range. that makes it close to 5.29 final gear, part time- 2WD/ I also have a 3rd gear lockup on my A440F Valve body upgrade, desmogged and running 12-13 degree timing advance and elec. fans setup ditching the fan clutch all together.
6800 lbs fully loaded and i can keep up with most 1View attachment 3993265FZs on similar setup..
How much power are you able to get with your advanced timing? Any pinging? Also, how are you able to know how advanced you are past the 7 degree bb, are you eye balling it or are you actually counting teeth?

I am quoting this from Mark W- old post...

"This is about as rock simple as it can be. No measurements, no math no special tools, no experience needed. Just line the BB up on the bottom of the timing window instead of the pointer in the middle of the window.
Bottom of the bb at the edge of the window is 12 degrees. Middle of the BB at the edge of the window is 13 degrees. Top of the BB at the edge of the window is 14 degrees."

The only way to make it simpler than this, is to tell you not to worry about timing marks at all... advance the distributor little bit...
if it pings under load back down some... if it doesn't you can advance a little bit more.

It is silly to try for this sort of precision without a dial back timing light anyway. And there is really little point. A degree or two is not going to affect how a stock 3FE runs.

Use premium gas will help with pinging.
