I am quoting this from Mark W- old post...

"This is about as rock simple as it can be. No measurements, no math no special tools, no experience needed. Just line the BB up on the bottom of the timing window instead of the pointer in the middle of the window.
Bottom of the bb at the edge of the window is 12 degrees. Middle of the BB at the edge of the window is 13 degrees. Top of the BB at the edge of the window is 14 degrees."

The only way to make it simpler than this, is to tell you not to worry about timing marks at all... advance the distributor little bit...
if it pings under load back down some... if it doesn't you can advance a little bit more.

It is silly to try for this sort of precision without a dial back timing light anyway. And there is really little point. A degree or two is not going to affect how a stock 3FE runs.

Use premium gas will help with pinging.
Wonderfull, I love simplicity!! Thanks!

My neighbor has a 3FE, when I unscrewed the oil fill cap with the engine idling, it immediately started running like crap. Are these engines designed to run in a vacuum? Is this normal? Thanks

Nope... mine runs fine with oil cap off...in fact, it should idle normal when the valve cover is removed when adjusting valves when warm...

Yep. The 3fe needs to be pretty tight for vacuum & unmetered air.

The PCV system keeps the crankcase in a vacuum. By removing the oil cap you create a significant vacuum leak

Just wanted to show off my FJ80 at Moab - Poison Spider Trail

Thanks. Yes, we passed Brad's group and he was afraid our group would be slowing them down.....I went up the medium hard line same line Brad and Marco's (OverlandX) took in his 392 on 40s. Where he broke his rear axle as you can see from his video. View attachment 4121163
That’s awesome and inspiring to see a 3fe holding its own on the hard trails. Hope to get mine to that stage soon.

Got a new torque converter from cruiser corp and the bolts are lather than stock. I’m tapping the flex plate holes to accommodate newer larger bolts. Also had to re tap the upper tranny bolt holt in the engine block. Never a dull moment trying to re assemble the 3FE!

Hey guys,
I’m looking at getting either the arb winch front bar or the non-winch bar. I’m trying to keep in mind weight with my already heavy vehicle. I’m not sure I’m going to run a winch in the future. I’m not opposed to modifying the non-winch bar in the future to accept the winch
Any advice would be appreciated from people who have either of the bumpers. TIA

WInch bumper FTW...

+1 for the winch bumper. Like others have pointed out the weight savings between the two is basically nothing and if you decide you want to run the winch later it's already set up for it. Ran mine with no winch for years
