Good afternoon Mudders!

My son and I just bought and drove home 2,200 miles a ‘69 FJ55 with a ‘89 3FE swapped in with no issues.

Trip thread:

Now that I’m home, I’ve had some intermittent starting issues. I’ve read a bunch of threads, but maybe still looking for some clarification.

-I did not do the wiring
-I have an aftermarket, out of tank fuel pump
-new fuel filter
-the small fuses all look new
-all grounds that I can see are tight
-it “feels” like a fuel issue
-not out of gas
-desmogged
-new OEM plugs, wires, distributer, button

-Sitting for a day, it will crank and idle for 6? Seconds, then die, then not crank at all. Just try to turn over and over.
-Next day, crank and drive fine.
-Next day, crank and die after 6 seconds.

The EFI relay is discounted by Toyota, but I was going to use a Bosch like in this thread:

—-Any other parts I should carry/replace beside efi relay before I take off on a road trip again?—-

Thanks

This relay gets hot. Not sure if that’s normal or not.

It’s right next to the drivers side kick panel fuse box. Not sure if that’s where it was on the 62 or not.

Have you tested the EFI relay yet? Relays are usually either good or bad but for whatever reason the EFI relays can be intermittently bad. Does it just have all the dash wiring and everything from a 62 in it?

When it’s not started, I just had to swap vehicles at the time. Just went around wiggling wires when it was running today and it never cut off.

It cranked today and I’m at the shop getting tires put on right now.

Pics from my phone. Not much 62 dash wiring

Was the check engine light wired in with the swap. If the EFI relay is bad the CEL will not light.

Intermittent issues like this may also be cause by a failing fuel pressure regulator (FPR), also discontinued by Toyota.

1)Does anyone know what this relay goes to? It’s by the 3FE fuse box under -my- dash.

2) and a pic of a FJ62 fuse box cover?

Thanks

Rock auto has a:

-circuit open relay
-fuel injection thermal
-ignition relay
-fuel pump cutoff switch

Not sure about the EFI relay? May have to do the Denso swap @Godwin did. Do you have the part # for that?

Thanks Mud

Just cause the answer isn’t giving itself is no reason to install an aftermarket efi that can be made to work... check out all wiring and connections to nss, coolant temp sensor- not temp gauge sensor... also look close at tps CALIBRATION... rule those out after fixing those relays...

Download the FJ62 FSM pdf (link is on Mud somewhere). You're gonna need it and it has a good troubleshooting section. If you were closer I'd get with you with my 3FE'd FJ60 and we could compare the wiring and locations of relays.

If the CEL is wired in you can check codes and that will help if it is an electrical issue.

I'd be checking fuel pressure during those intermittent starts before doing anything.

I will say this - I fixed many issues on my 3FE swap, but my ultimate problem was an occluded fuel return line. Check the fuel pressure in the rail showed >70 PSI, ~2x the specified pressure.

Not saying this is your problem, but I too would be curious what your pressure is. Maybe too low? At the beginning of my adventures I had debris from the fuel tank clogging the inlet of my inline pump. We should have had a pre-filter before the pump to begin with, but I was told that was not necessary because the tank had just been boiled out. Yeah...
