I would consider 5.29s very seriously, depending on what gears you currently have and how much weight you add to it later. Have any rub stepping up in tire size?

Stock was 4.10's with 225/75R15 tires. I don't plan to ad much weight to it other than maybe an ARB bumper and some sliders.
It's close, but no tire rub!

Going from ~28" tire to a 33" is a 16% increase as is the change from 4.10s to 4.88s. However, you're increasing weight and rolling resistance, albeit slightly, you will still appreciate the ~22% gear reduction 5.29s would give. And since the 4cyl operates better in a little higher rpm at highway speeds, and the slower crawl is a plus.

Of course since there's more tire options in 17", then you'll want to step up to 34s, build a real rear bumper with tire carrier, and hang some decent skids on this thing. That's when you'll praise the 5.29s... You're welcome :flipoff2:

I bought this rig for the gas mileage....looks like that idea is out the window!
I am seriously considering a solid axle swap. It seems that a SAS kit from trail gear and the passenger drop t-case adapter would be close in price to a good set of coil overs and skid plates for the ifs. 33's is as big as I care to go for tires and I plan to drive this rig every day. Thoughts???

This sounds awesome and normally I'd say go for it. However the term DD and SAS don't really fit the bill for me. I think you'd be better off keeping the IFS for DD'ing. I've been there... first on paper it looks good but eventually you'll get to a point were practicality of a DD is non existent. With that said you should prolly pull the trigger on the SAS.

I DD the 85 4Runner, just driving the car when I have the Runner down for something I'm working on. I love it, and it's on 33s with 5.29s locked front and rear. Just personal tastes. If you want the mileage, get a Prius Eric. :)

Your 85 came with a solid axle correct? I think 86 was the year of the ifs right? Anyway I understand the solid axle if it came from the factory that way. But to go from IFS to a SA would be a lot to get perfect for a DD, thats all.

Yes, 85 was last year of solid axle, but the housing is about all that's factory. High steer, ifs steering box,ifs brakes, soon to be ifs hubs. I agree, a lot of unnecessary work for a pure daily driver, but having wheeled my daily driver for years, both ifs and solid, I'd go solid in a heartbeat if I was going to wheel it too.

Regearing helps more that you realize. I can still average 17 mpg, and 18-19 if I play really nice. Put that SAS crap right out of your head, it will be a constant problem and cost a minimum of double what you figure. Plus with the leaf kits it will be stupid tall, miserable to drive, and you'll trailer it everywhere. I'll second the Prius comment. :p

I finally had time to work on the 40. Ever since rolling it at Moab I have had fuel delivery issues. I thot crap in the tank might have dislodged in the roll so I pulled the tank. It was beutiful in side - looked new. So I put it back in and replumbed all new lines figuring one of hte steel lines must have a hole allowing air to get in. That along with a recent fuel pump (me first attempt at a fix) and now it seems to run well. I also eliminated all the emmisions and went with a simple breather vent. www.tanksinc.com

going to cruise Moab and I hope it all works well.

Hope you can keep it right side up this time! Wish I were with you guys on the trail again.

Gary, you will head all the way to moab but cant come hang with the homies?

Tore the drivers seat apart because it wouldn't go forward. Assumed it was the gears but ends up it is the switch on the side of the seat. Now I need to figure out how to get the switch out and see if cleaning the contacts will fix it before I buy another switch for it.

Bummer good luck.

I'm your huckleberry.

Took one apart at the junkyard and have one extra. Only issue is that the one I am willing to give up does not have the stud on it for the seat back. If yours has it, then maybe we can swap it over.

Anyway, it is an entire harness.

Are you talking about the stud for the seat back adjustment? If so mine has it. I need to figure out how to remove the switch. I read some threads and it looks like I have to take the leather loose on the bottom of the seat to get to the switch. Does that sound right?

Yes and yes.

There is only 4 bolts holding the chair in, so I would get it out and on the bench.

update

stucknks came over and we swapped out parts and got his seat working. full rebuild of the switches.

Nice finally meeting you! Small world too.

Just looked at the pic. Who needs a fire safe cabinet for stains when you have a fireman in the house!

It was good to meet you too 2fpower and what a small world it is! The wife will be glad the seat is fixed so she can drive the 80 now! Can't say I am that excited about her driving it but got to keep the wife happy!

We won't even talk about how and where my combustibles are stored at my house. Guess I should really practice what I preach!

Thanks again for the help!

Who's a fireman? I need to pick your brain for some advice on classes to take.
