You're the Life of The Party Tony!

When I saw your post, I remembered the long discussion you and I had about actual language versus perception.

Yes, Tony is correct that TLCA formed a precedent under his presidency because folks might perceive a conflict of interest if a paid contractor served in an elected position. Also, before y'all ask, the Treasurer is not a Contractor. Our Treasurer gets paid because that position can be sued (or go to jail).

Y'all please forgive me if I've caused any confusion. My reading of the bylaws was literal.
Happy Trails! N

not to be a party p**per, but contractor/board member has come up before and a clear line of separation has been maintained.

Isn't this the same reason our current Admin had to remove herself from a board position?

and I'd thank you too for volunteering, but if you are a contractor, are you really a volunteer?
and thus begins the confusion between contractor or volunteer. :)

Just noting, want to be very careful about how you approach this, or decide which one you prefer.
(however, the issue is moot pending election results.)

Good job on the web site! and I really mean that. Nicely done.

I was an armchair Ih8mud'er for a while and that is where I found out about the TLCA. (Something else to chew on whilst pondering how to grow the TLCA.) I think that a central and eastern event could be great as long as proper care is taken in organizing, funding and running them.

A couple of questions: Does the TLCA fund the Rubithon? (Partially or completely?) Would it make sense to not have the Rubithon as 'The' markee event and have it be an event hosted by multiple clubs, more like the rest of the 'sanctioned' events, thus freeing $$$ to be put towards other areas in need. (Not Toyota Trails. It is already a great and much adored newsletter disguised as a magazine.)

For those of you that have been around for a while here, I appreciate your commitment to this endevour. My perspective is that of someone who is just grateful to have a club to get together with and wheel.

Jim (Blue 60)

BTW, Art's energy is contagious.

Just to add more history: I had to resign my position as MSVP when I took on the webmaster job back in early 2006, under the current BOD. Jenn went through the same thing when she became the Administrator. If the bylaws don't state this clearly enough, they should be revised.

Mark, that's nothing against you or the job you've done as webmaster. Your enthusiasm is great and you've obviously put in some long nights on the new website. If you're elected as TLCA president, I'm sure you can find another Cruiserhead to continue on your work (I'm not applying for the job :D).

Rubithon is self funding and contributes money to TLCA -- not the other way around.

Rubithon is organized by a group of local California TLCA chapters, who have worked together for years to put on the event. It's exactly as you have suggested, and it's been that way for 20 years.

As for whether it's 'The' markee event, it probably depends on where you live. I hear GSMTR is pretty awesome as well. Personally, I like to think Cruise Moab has a certain level of prestige as well. :grinpimp:

The only difference between Rubithon and all the other TLCA sanctioned events is that Rubithon is the only TLCA SPONSORED event. All the rest of the events are organized by chapters, which keep the profits or donate them to land use causes (as we do with with Cruise Moab profits). So in that sense, it is 'the TLCA event,' since it is the only one.

Again, not trying to cast stones, simply noting this is a sensitive subject.

Hulk pretty much sumed it up. Think of it this way... Rubithon is no different than any other event, except all proceeds go to TLCA. When I took over as chair, I had zero dollars to start with. I currently have about 1K for seed money for next year. All expenses are paid by TLCA members, as only TLCA members can attend. :)

and no, Rubithon is not the Markee event. Round up, Cruise Moab, GSMTR and BHCC are all superior events... As all TLCA events.

No worries and totally agree with you Matt. Most of our chapters have web sites and would be a great opportunity one of their web masters to take the roll.

Wow, three guys running for President. This could get exciting.

Are you running again for AVP Nick or are we going to get some new blood to step up and carry on that great volunteer tradition? The reason I ask is I saw you were nominated, but I don't recall seeing you accept, thought maybe you might be leaving the door open to see if anyone else steps up, just curious.

Yes Ken,
I thought I accepted Alan's nomination on a call. If not, consider me in. Of course, I encourage others to run as well. The only elections I've won were the ones where I was the only candidate.

I don't politic much.
I consider TLCA to be an association of independent clubs. For me, Chapters come first.

Most of our members are magazine subscribers. They make Toyota Trails possible. Toyota Trails is the biggest reason I stay with TLCA. I work hard to show respect for their financial contribution.

I believe TLCA should allow folks to explore options and present the best option to the BOD for approval or denial. I hate long conference calls, showboating, or emotional repeats of Internet arguments.

That about covers it.

I'm going to nominate Jeff Zepp for AVP as well. His attention to detail is very inline with the duties outlined in the Bylaws.

The ADMINISTRATIVE VP shall be responsible for TLCA contracts, TLCA Bylaws, TLCA SOPs, and the TLCA annual budget. The AVP shall work in conjunction with the Treasurer in creating the annual TLCA Budget for presentation to the TLCA Board of Directors.

In what order do the officer positions get voted on? If president gets voted on first, that would make sense.

Jeff certainly would make a great AVP, too.

I know he thought about the office of president for a while before accepting the nomination. It would not be fair to him to vote on the AVP position before president.

The bylaws do not specify an order to the polling. The SOPs do not address polling or elections.
That means it's up to Alan in December.
Hope that helps,

Happy Trails! N

I guess he *could* get voted in for both and then accept the position he really wants. Then the 2nd highest vote getter in the other position would get that position. I have seen that happen in other organizations...

T

Yes, it can happen that way.
So.... if you get the least number of votes, do you still want the job?
I've always recommended folks only run for one position. Justin didn't agree with me and nominated himself and Jeff for C&MIR.
LOL, it's not too late to nominate Jeff for MSVP, Secretary, and Treasurer. ;-)

Another difference is it was given seed money to get the initial event up and going.

I Nominate Jeff for . . oh never mind.:D

Jeff is one of the most passionate people I have ever seen towards the TLCA and he would do well at any position.

It seems to be a quandary for sure. When I accepted the nomination for President, I figured win or go home. Justin's proposal was intriguing in that we need the CIR position filled no matter what, and if he wins President I would continue doing what I do, or if I win we have an excellent candidate for CIR, and I don't recall any other nominations for CIR. Mark throwing his hat into the ring adds a new twist and should he win, we'd be looking for a new webmaster when we already have a lot of other pressing issues to address.

I hereby decline nomination for AVP. This should reduce the muddy waters.

I still don't see any nominations for Secretary to backfill Art's role - we have a little over 24 hours to get that nomination or else have him continue doing a dual role with only one vote until we have a special election for Secretary.

Happy cruisin'!

Well since Jeff has turned down the nomination for AVP, I'd like to nominate a couple other folks.

David Harrison from Upstate Cruisers

David has been on the TLCA BOD for Upstate Cruisers for many years, is an attorney and would do a great job.

Peter Straub from Rocky Mountain Land Cruisers

It would be great to have a Canuck on the elected BOD and bring their perspective, as well as grow our Canadian membership. He's a physicist, a past President of RMCL and has been on the TLCA BOD as their delegate.

Here! Here!

:beer::beer::beer:

David is a founding father of UC. I cannot tell you how many times I consulted with him on UC matters. He would be a really good fit for this position.
