A couple questions for those with more knowledge than I, are my current FJ60 gauges going to be compatible with the 1FZ, or am I going to need a new gauge cluster?

I believe the 60s oil pressure sensor will thread right into the 1fz, and if not you'll be able to plug right into the 1fz's sensor and get about the same functionality (don't use the wrong terminal though!), coolant temp you can make a pigtail to adapt to the 1fz's sensor, the signal will be compatible (the resistance vs temp curves may be slightly different but probably not too much). Speedometer is cable driven so as long as you're running a 60 transfer case you're gtg. It also uses a 4 pulse/rev Reed sensor (not sure what for exactly but I don't think you'll be messing with that in your swap anyway). Tachometer would be the only tricky one because the redlines are different and because I can't say off the top of my head weather or not the 1fz has a wire going to the distributor that carries the same signal as that of the 60. Worst case scenario you'll be coming up with your own face plate and fabbing up a hall effect sensor with the math done such that you adjust alter the needle range to accommodate a higher redline. Alternatively you could possibly look into fitting the 80s tachometer mechanism behind the 60s needle and face plate? It's all doable and would be awesome to keep the stock look.

Any recommendations re-A/C? Do I just keep the old 60 setup, source an FJ80 system, or something different?

You'll use the 1fz compressor and have custom lines that connect it to the 60s stock system. But you'll be converting to r134a so every seal in the stock system will need to be upgraded. Electrically the simplest solution would be to swap your A/c amplifier with a donor from an fj62, its plug and play. Compressor will wire right up to the 60.

That is all exciting news @60 toy ota . I had a brief moment of distraction when I saw @bagochips76 posted his 2UZ adaptors are ready to go, that is a very intriguing option but the 1FZ is already most of the way through the rebuild and I have a pile o parts for it. Is there any problem keeping the FJ60 A/C condenser, that wont reduce efficiency?

I don't claim to be an A/C expert, but I'd say the gains, if any, of using the 80's condenser wouldn't be worth the hassle of trying to adapt it. If you're worried about performance you'd be better off buying an upgraded FJ60 condenser, assuming such a thing exists. The scientific way to look at it would be to compare the number of rows and rods. More surface area is going to be better performing regardless of age or vehicle.

@Meshal can you confirm a couple part numbers for me? The bell housing I am looking at buying is 31111-60302 (1FZ-H151), with a clutch fork of 31204-36110 (this is what FJ Co used, but that was with their own bell housing). If anyone has thoughts on any of these part numbers below, please let me know. @gonzopancho how is the bell housing going on your end since I haven't ordered anything yet? Tagging a few others as well just to get the most input @dogfishlake @FJ60Cam @OGBeno

Flywheel (FZJ70) : 13405-66020 or 13405-66030 (not sure what the difference is?)
Clutch Disc : 31250-36343
Clutch Cover (PP) : 31210-36330
Slave Cylinder : 31470-60171
Pilot bearing : 90363-15017
Release Fork : 31204-36110 (this is for a 1PZ, but is what FJ Co. used???)
T/O Bearing : 31230-60130
Flywheel Bolt: 90913-01021
Bell Housing: 31111-60302 (newest sub for 60300/60301)

Thanks!

I'm still ready for a 1fz/h55 bellhousing :)

Newest bell housing PN is 31111-60303. Everything else looks correct.

@OGBeno thank you for the number, I had seen that number but thought it was for a different application as it wasn't referenced in my other sources (onviously older). @gonzopancho if my project works out, I'd be happy to share any lessons learned, and perhaps purchase your bell housing to do this same swap into my 40 when you have your setup running. Thank you both for the help!

I’ve been tossing around all the same ideas that you have and I’ve settled on going with the Ford 300. Iron block straight 6 and tunable up to 1200, I’m planning 350ish. Parts are available everywhere and minus not being TEQ parts it’s just as tried and true. Good luck!

I'm a big fan of the EFI 300 six. I've done several swaps into 70's F100 and F250's.

But what do you mean by 1200 and 350? HP? That's not realistic at all. An EFI 300 six is maybe a 250hp engine. But they are solid, get great fuel mileage and will run 500k miles.

Well I am having trouble getting this bell housing. I talked to CruiserParts.net and they assured me it was on their shelf and would ship immediately. Week later, I'm told they have ordered it and will get it to me soon as they have it...BULL SNOT. I can get it through Yoshi parts or Amayama, but with shipping it works out more expensive. However, I got to thinking, if the plan is to modify the new bell housing, why can't we modify the 2F housing that I already have? Is the diameter too small to accommodate the 1FZ and the 275mm clutch?

Edit: I don't know if it will accommodate the 1FZ, but it is actually a 2F clutch that I am putting in this, per FJCo's parts list, which makes me think maybe my current 2F housing would be fine?

I can't help with the bellhousing question but I do want to ad that IMO you should avoid cruiserparts.

I knew better, but they actually answered their phone and said the part was in stock and generally seemed helpful. As they were the only domestic supplier I thought I'd give it a chance, but so much for that idea. Didn't figure they would straight up lie about having the part or not, but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised...
