Thanks. A little off topic, but I was also discussing the Cometic MLS Head Gaskets with them. They build Subaru motors more than anything, but do it all. They were trying this setup on the Subarus and having so many failures that they said this was a disaster for Cometic on those engines. That's obviously no where close to an inline 6, but it caught my attention.

Yes, I have often told people unless you need an MLS gasket and stronger studs, like say you are going forced induction there is no need to stray from the stock gasket and OEM studs. The OEM gasket was re-engineered and the OEM studs are completely capable of building a solid motor. Not to mention OEM are more forgiving as they have some elasticity while MLS and ARP L19/625+ won't.

I think the Suby issue was that those blocks have the "floating" bores, not a solid block. I'm new to dealing with a Supercharger and an 80 so this is my learning curve.

You could reuse them in the same sense that you could reuse the old oil you drain when you change the oil. If you're that far into the engine just replace them.

Not the same actually... Big T says change the oil... Big T says CHECK the head bolts-live and die on here by what T says.... Don't just change valve springs or rod bolts "while in there"

This seems to be a very subjective matter. My head is off right now. My bolts all look great and measure equal and well within spec. I spoke to three engine builders who know the 1fz and they all said that it's very rare they find a factory head bolt that's not reusable. I went ahead and called paradiseracing, who has ARP make a custom set specifically for the 1fz. The guy there told me there is absolutely no reason to use studs unless my engine is boosted. Essentially the guy talked me out of giving him my money. I'm gonna rock the used bolts if my gasket set would ever get here!

I imagine that's probably the real world truth on the matter. On another note, how much boost can a stock head bolt and head gasket handle?

Getting ready to order a set of the ARPs. What is the difference between the Opel and Supra studs??? Opel studs appear to be longer, how much longer? I also see that you need to cut two of the Opel studs, is this true of the Supra studs? If you cut the studs, how much are you looking at?

I used Opel 209-4702
I measured that I needed to cut 1/4" off the front two studs. I used calipers and drew up a sketch that I can't find any more. I'm pretty sure you can't get by without cutting them down.

@Rwhat , Both ends of my studs are the same thread diameter and pitch. I have two left over studs and nuts due to the Opel V6 having more than a Toyota I-6. The nuts will thread on either end the same. The extra nuts come in handy when you cut off the studs. I threaded them on first, then used them to clean and de-burr the threads while I backed them off. I still polished them afterwards to ensure good clean threads.

I'm happy I went with Supra studs (ARP 203-4205). They have more than sufficient engagement, don't require cutting/grinding, and you save about $50.
