Ol' Shel is a damn genius with these trucks, and a pleasure to deal with. He lives a bit of a hike away from me though unfortunately. In three years of ownership I have had no need, (or real desire) to purchase parts or service from a franchised Canadian Toyota store. When I had my CDM 81 BJ60, I went to a Toyota dealer here because they had a long tenure (read SENIOR) technician on staff. He had the 'knowledge', and is no doubt long retired. Honestly- I don't think I'd feel comfortable leaving my HDJ at a Toyota store these days anyway..

Hey Sheldon, is a swap of an early 90's 1HD-T and a 5 speed less involved than trying to get a later model 80 (95-97) set up with an auto? Could you still do the full time case with a 5 speed?

By the way, I hate that I work with Terry and have to hear about this build every day! :flipoff2: (read; fueling the fire) Right now my Cruiser is the coolest in the lot... not for long:mad:

Paul

Oh ya, how does this all work with our wonderful Aircare program?

OOooOO Nice Build! Subscribed!

Sheldon is great to deal with and always have fun dropping by as I go through the 'Wack.....

Paul, I have to admit your truck is definatly prettier and in better condition but all that means is I need to go shopping at cruisin and slee to get those bumpers and sliders. Ps the basket roof rack, skid plates and rear drawer system should all be done by the time the engine is in!

yes .. bolt on .. in both ways ..

very interesting indeed....i will definitely be watching this thread like a hawk.....

i too have a 1hd-t coming by way of mr. sheldon...and i will assume i'm number 7 on his swap list ;p
unfortunately i dont have the time or place to perform the swap on my own...but who better to do it than THE MAN himself....

mine replaces a 1992 3fe of 180k miles that ticks like a typewriter these days but has never let me down in any aspect....ever...

GL with your undertaking/project

Paul.

Yeah, you got lucky having sheldon do your swap. I was asking him to do mine for a while now but My swap is a new variant and he didn't have the time for all the trouble shooting and bugs after. I did get the next best thing having him in my area.

Wonder if yours will be done before mine? wow I hope not. it means I've done something wrong.\

Cheers

Jason,

Yeah I have seen you around and Jenni used to live in my Carriage house before her new place. I also work with Paul Vanhove.

Planning on piecing up some of your gear it looks amazing. working on some ideas you might want as well.

Cheers

Wow, small world. Jenni mentioned that there was a cruiser in the garage, but had no idea the scope of what was about to happen to it. We should get together for a

1 HD-t Installed

Well haven't spent a lot of time this last while but got a full day in and little bits here and there. this has let me be able too...

- clean fuel tank and re-protect with gravel guard.

- Diesel fuel lines installed.

- Got the diesel fuel pickup along with a new AN -6 fitting for the sub tank fuel transfer line. mounted and main tank installed.

- The gasser filler neck messuresd and cut for the dual filler neck. This is where it payed to be a pack rat! I was able to rebead the cut tube for the a fuel one using a tool i dug out of the garbage at work.

- 1HD-T installed in the bay and started to sort where everything goes. Not quite as easy as I thought I think the later model year is a bit more different that the early ones. but still no fabrication yet.

- 12v alternator installed on the diesel engine.

- Today I will get the Dual filler neck installed and start installing all accessories in the engine bay and start getting the electrical sorted in my head while looking at it.

- Big day hoping to get some good progress. will post some more pics later

Yes, going 5spd greatly simplifies things, but it requires a bunch of new OEM LHD Eurospec interior parts, shifter bits, pedal, clutch master etc.. so factor in some money for all that. You have to move the tranny crossmember forward which can be done quick and dirty, or by cutting the brackets off the frame and rewelding em fwd by a few inches.

Aircare is a non issue. Just tell em what's changed when you go in there for your test. Or if you insure prior to doing your test, just have em change the fuel code on the Registration.

Lookin good Terry, you should be drivin er by the time I get back from Surf & Turf!
Have fun...

Surf and turf? I'm an hour or so South was thinking about bringing my new fj 80 and hanging out?

1HD-T update

Time is going by fast but I am making good progress.

What is now done or a work in progress.

-Fuel filter now mounted properly and fuel connections made.

-Vacuum can installed and connected.

-Dual filler neck installed. Modified main gas tank filler installed. Painted the dual filler ugly brown because thats all I had.

- Sub tank temp installed for measurement of flexible lines.

- 90% of a very pretty exhaust system installed. Not torqued up yet.

- New RAD installed.

- Spent a lot of time trying to sort out what I will be doing with the Air-conditioning lines::: problem is existing the 1996 system is R134a and Pump on the 1991 is R12a. both have slightly different fittings. The 1FZ-FE compressor bolts right up to the mounts on the 1HD-T but the 1FZ pump is longer so the Pulley is not aligned. Tried to swap the top fitting mount plate and that works great but the 1FZ lines are to short with the compressor mounted at the top of the engine. So long story short what I should have done was cut the lines from each compressor and joined them together with the R134a on the truck side and R12A on the engine side. but i didn't I cut the truck side fitting off the 1FZ line and now I have to get lines made with each end as I need them. who knows maybe I will get another line and go the splice route?

- Also spent time looking at the cruise control system wondering what to do there. Don't know anything about it so it will be more book work before I proceed. Don't need it now but I have sure grown to like it on road trips after not having it on the BJ60. Any one been here you can chime in at any time.

I have to say this swap has not been very hard up until this point but most of that is because of the work I do and all of the Planning and troubleshooting Sheldon has done with certain L/H Drive 1HD-T parts that make install so nice./ Thanks Sheldon! well worth the dollars spent getting the conversion from him as apposed to buying a Half cut and reinventing the wheel.

But In the next day or two the truly tough part will begin. At least for me. I work very well mechanically but when it comes to the electrical I am no Sparky. I will be able to fumble my way through and make some good notes at the same time. hopefully Sheldon will be home from his fun in the sun by then so I can ask some questions if needed.

Also looking at where to install my Sub tank Fuel Guage, Altimeter and Turbo Boost /EGT Guage. Wish someone made a small Guage 2" or less but seems 52mm is the smallest. Thinking I could fit all 3 in the space between the pedestal and dash. Took the AUSI. Guage pack apart and I think I could make nice gauges out of the parts.

Other than that I have just been getting all the little stuff completed or worked out. Got the Throttle cable and the hand Throttle set up. trans cooler lines run, remainder of the exhaust put into place(except tip below sub tank.) Also working out the fuel lines to the sub tank.

well thats about it. I will start on the wiring next week and really get into it.

Cheers

There are some great gauge clusters out of Japan that will fit in the double DIN slot if you get rid of the factory stereo. I almost did this in my HDJ81 . . . when I had it.

Here is a link to the company but haven't done any research into it in the last 2 years: Defi DIN 3 Gauge Clusters (Metric Measurements): JSC Speed
