There are some great gauge clusters out of Japan that will fit in the double DIN slot if you get rid of the factory stereo. I almost did this in my HDJ81 . . . when I had it.

Here is a link to the company but haven't done any research into it in the last 2 years: Defi DIN 3 Gauge Clusters (Metric Measurements): JSC Speed

they are freaking expensive.
Do the vent gauges like sheldon and jason
After owning an 81 I would say go this route.

Yeah I looked at the gauge clusters as well and they are looking at $600 for a set of three and I didn't see much for choice.

I got the pedestal apart and pretty sure I can put the sub tank gauge and Altimeter in there in a super nice clean install. I am also looking at the Mc Nally electronics Boost/EGT combo gauge. Not sure if it will fit in the pedestal but I used to be a Composite Specialist so I am thinking I can come up with a nice mount for the gauge and other accessories like my I phone and GPS. wile keeping the cords out of sight. That is still down the road a bit so you'll have to stay tuned for that.

Aslo interested in the MAD Man gauges. But I will let you all in on my decision.

Cheers on the info.

That is the way to go! Just dive right in there, the engine is a gem and you will not regret it, just a quick point, in your opening post you mentioned you have a SEVEN seater? My 80 euro spec has EIGHT seats, the JDM spec FIVE, how did you come up with that number or do the Canadians have a different option...............again?

regards

Dave

The truck will seat 8 no problem but we only have 2 seat belts in the back so legally it is only a 7 seater.

I see you have a 150 amp alternator in your truck ( as noted in your signature) what are you running? looking to bump the amps up on mine but not sure which way to go.

Cheers,

Terry

I'm back from Pismo now if you want to swing by and check my 80 for reference.

The euro specs have lap belts in the centre of each row of seats. The alternator comes from the Tundra/Sequoia on your side of the pond and is pretty much a bolt in job, have a search on mud for 'alternator upgrade'.

Hey guys progress report coming soon. had to Fly away to Yellowknife NWT for an emergency aircraft repair.

For those of you that don't know Yellowknife is further North than Fairbanks Alaska but right about in the middle of the continent. right next door to the ICE PILOT'S Buffalo Airways and -30 degrees below zero.

HAPPY XXXXXING Christmas to ME!

Hey every one well Christmas has come early for me.

Today with the help of my father and Sheldon from G&S cruisers my new 1HD-T diesel came to life in my 1996 80 series.

It's been a long run and frustrating at times to say the least. Its been about 6 weeks since I began this swap and I feel pretty good about where I am today except for the fact that I haven't road tested the truck yet and I am supposed to be driving it 1700km's home for Christmas in 4 days.

In that 6 weeks I traveled 2500 km's north for a week to rescue a broken Hercules aircraft and continued to work a full time job with lots of overtime to help pay for this endeavour.

OK where am I today......

1Hd-t diesel engine and A442F auto transmission installed and running.

Rage Big Bore 3" exhaust with ceramic coating. Boy does it sound nice.

New Rad, Dual Batteries, Walbro FRb5 fuel pump

Aussi, Aux fuel tank installed complete with a custom in tank fuel pump. I went with a simple tank to tank transfer system because as much as I like OEM Toyota I like Simple even more. Still have to run the switch wire to the dash but for now I can use it old school wire twist to transfer fuel.

Typical diesel hand throttle.

Off topic but installed Paul Francis's interior LED light kit tonight - VERY NICE.

Doesn't seem like much but it's a lot!

I still have to install after Christmas, Brand spankin new Mcnalley engineering Dual EGT/Boost gauge, Halman boost controller, Sub fuel tank Guage and Altimeter (once I get the mount made in front of the shifter on the pedestal.)

Thats about it sorry its been so long. but it bought to find time to work on the truck let alone post here on mud.

here are some pics so you can seen the goods. once I get it road tested I will post a You tube link to the running engine. I cannot believe how quiet this engine is!

I will quote my wife from tonight when I started the truck for her and my girls for the first time.

" Are you sure you installed a diesel? It's quieter that the gas engine!"

Oh Yeah Its Diesel............................

That's spectacular man... Congrats!!!

Congrats and well done!
There's got to be some extra gratification knowing you performed all the work yourself.
Hope the project was everything you wanted it to be

Paul.

Congrats! That's a clean install, and you'll be happy with this motor (and mileage ;-) for a long time. I have two engines sitting on my shop floor waiting for a warm body to keep it happy. I might be starting one in a months time.

I'm not sure if you figured out the AC fitting issue yet, but they sell off-the shelf R134a fitting adapters which go in place of the R12 fittings on your existing compressor. You just remove the check valve inside the existing fitting, then bolt on the new one and you're set to recharge. Just make sure you buy a new drier for good measure.

Christmas in the North

Well I got the truck insured and on the road!

For x-mas we drove the truck with it's new engine north 1000 miles to Fort McMurray Alberta. The truck drove amazing. Still needs some adjusting though. First off still working on the shifting as it slows to much on the big hills but loves to drive almost everywhere else at 110-120 km per hour. Also using to much fuel and running very rich. Right now with the new sub tank I am getting about 550 miles for the 140 liters on board. About 18 miles per gallon. Aside from that the truck is great. Will do some adjustments while here so I will post on milage updates.

Will post some snow pics soon

Reading that made me excited as if I was driving it! Congrats!
