Well I got the truck insured and on the road!

For x-mas we drove the truck with it's new engine north 1000 miles to Fort McMurray Alberta. The truck drove amazing. Still needs some adjusting though. First off still working on the shifting as it slows to much on the big hills but loves to drive almost everywhere else at 110-120 km per hour. Also using to much fuel and running very rich. Right now with the new sub tank I am getting about 550 miles for the 140 liters on board. About 18 miles per gallon. Aside from that the truck is great. Will do some adjustments while here so I will post on milage updates.

Will post some snow pics soon
What brings you to fort mcmurray?

Very impressed with how little time it took you to complete the swap.

could be but remember winter diesel is the s***s for fuel economy. I am getting almost 13l/100kms when in the summer I am getting about 10.5L/100kms.:meh:

plus if you drive it at that speed economy does go down....

For sure, the winter diesel will cost in fuel economy, also 55mph seems to be the sweet spot for fuel economy on these trucks. Aerodynamically disadvantaged you could say.

trip home to fort McMurray

What brings me to Fort Mac? I grew up in Fort McMurray and left in 1995. Still have family there and went home for X-mas.

To bad I didn't read this thread till I got home here in chilliwack. we could have gotten togther.

As far as the amount of time it would have taken me longer if I didn't have Sheldon , 70's guy, as a resource and the mechanical really isn't all that bad its all electrical. Luckily a lot of that electrical is now gone.

And I still have a lot of work to do. still lots of set up and adjustments,

Tac install, EGT, Boost gauge install, glow plug switch and wiring to complete, sub tank switch and gauge to finish and install. and various other bits.

very happy so far though. nice to be able to drive home on 2 tanks of fuel.

Terry

fuel economy

Just an update, while I was away I disconnected the boost fuel pump as my fuel filter was weeping from the top with the pressure. I also adjusted the fuel down a small amount. while this did make a small difference the truck is still running excessively rich and I still am getting similar milage just a little better, but I still need to do more adjustments.

I didn't want to do to much while I was away as I don't have the tach in or the EGT pyrometer installed. And hey anything is better than the GAS PIG 1FZ!

I do agree with sheldon on the 55 mph sees to make a difference, problem was a 4 year old and 7 month old in a truck for 17 hours gives you a bit of getthereitis so keeping the speed down when the truck seemed to like 60-65 so much was tough.

Now all the bits to finish up i will keep you all posted on the milage updates as I get the adjustments done.

Cheers

AC Lines

Yeah I got the AC lines sorted. I had both line so I took them to an AC shop and had new lines made up with each ends I needed. I looked everywhere up here for the adapters but couldn't find them. Who sells them in your area? The drier was from the 134a system and was working great when I started the swap. what are you charging for your engines and swaps? do you have the trans as well? also what year are the engines and trans from as I have a couple of guys looking for a similar swap to mine in the later 95-97 80's.

Cheers

Terry

Congrats! That's a clean install, and you'll be happy with this motor (and mileage ;-) for a long time. I have two engines sitting on my shop floor waiting for a warm body to keep it happy. I might be starting one in a months time.

I'm not sure if you figured out the AC fitting issue yet, but they sell off-the shelf R134a fitting adapters which go in place of the R12 fittings on your existing compressor. You just remove the check valve inside the existing fitting, then bolt on the new one and you're set to recharge. Just make sure you buy a new drier for good measure.

SUBSCRIBED.

Nice job. Videos?

Sorry for the confusion on the hose question, i meant the high and low pressure check valves have adapters to go from r12 and r 134. You do have to adapt the hoses by moving ends from the old fzj80 hose to the 1hd-t hose.

I charge 5k for the conversion plus the engine. There are a few engines floating around there, mine are all sold at the moment. I would check with Sheldon at g&s, i believe he might have one coming in soon.

I have money set aside for this conversion and I'm 99% ready to make the jump. I just have a few important concerns I need answered.

1) smog/title/registration issues in Nevada, USA regarding converting a gasoline vehicle to diesel.

2) freeway speed. I would like to be able to travel at 70MPH for long distances.

3) I want the install to look like it came from the factory. Indicators, cruise control, tach, etc all still function.

Can someone please comment.

Thanks in advance!

Tor is your man if you are ready to pull the trigger.

You will be very happy.

I cannot comment on #1.

2. yes

3. yes

any updates on fuel economy? 18mpg seems pretty pathetic given that a well running 1fz is matching that on hwy.

is this just the full time4wd coupled with the A442 tranny which is impacting fuel economy of the 1hdt???

I cruise at 70mph easily, but for best efficiency it likes 65mph.

Installs are completely factory and all gauges work perfectly.

You should check with your states licensing requirements for diesel conversions. Some states require an engine to be newer than the vehicle it gets installed in, as well as epa certified and available in a similar class vehicle (eg. A half ton truck)

Hope that helps

I can certainly attest to Tor's 1Hdt installs looking like they came from Toyota that way. I have seen his latest in person, and also seen factory HDJ80's and they are legit. This is the best engine for an 80 in my opinion. Hopefully Toyota will realize this soon. :)

Just converted it over so I can understand it better. Whats wrong with 18-19mpg? You wont do much better than that for an average. And I would like to see a fz get near that.

i guess it would be better to compare hwy. mpg (what im interested in).

is the problem that the 1hdt is not operating in its "ideal" zone rpm wise? ie- would rubber overdrive help?

What rpm does the 1hdt spin at with 33s/ stock gearing/at 65mph?

does anyone have hp and torque curves of the 1hdt handy?? or know where the hp and torque curve lines intersect?

Depends if its auto or manual. 33's and 65 will be around 2500rpm pushing 8psi. Dont know what you mean by torque and power curves intersecting?

I'll call Monday morning. I'm ready to talk business. ;)

HP and torque intersect at 5252rpm, always. HP is derived from torque, it's a mathematical constant that the 2 lines intersect at that point.

Also, when comparing mpg make sure you are using the same gallons for each scenario, guys in the UK use different sized gallons which makes their figures SOUND a lot better than what you can expect, and then there are Canadian gallons as well, compare apples to apples only.

It appears a diesel conversion in Nevada is going to be difficult/paperwork nightmare ;(
Engine must be same year or newer.

What other power options are there where registration/smog are not issues? Stroke? Turbo?

Its rattly and loud if you go with the mechanical pump model, but a 3.9 4BT from Cummins can be purchased brand new for half of what a used Toyota diesel costs. Gets you around the age factor for emissions, but in turn opens lots of other questions to answer.

Proffitts cruisers does lots of 3.9 work and could answer your questions.
