did you know that factory diesel 80 sub tank setup did not use any transfer pump ? just a solenoid to swap from the front tank to the sub tank ..

Looking good man. I'm in town too, would love to come check it out! Shoot me a PM if you like.

Jason,

Yeah I have seen you around and Jenni used to live in my Carriage house before her new place. I also work with Paul Vanhove.

Planning on piecing up some of your gear it looks amazing. working on some ideas you might want as well.

Cheers

Yes I did know that the sub tank used a valve. the problem is i don't have the complete assy. and don't want to run my diesel dry trying to pull from a dry tank.

that's would not gonna gappen .. you have the factory gauge, in my 80 also ou have the 5gals warning light and also you will know when your engine it's running out of fuel ..

Nice work man! Your not messin' about.

I know that you had wanted to keep the ABS and air bags functional, is that still going to work with the current set up?

Makes me want to see what else Sheldon has laying about his shop:D I'd settle for an older 1HD-T as I'm not that partial to my ABS or my air bags. I figure the bags would be pretty crusty by now anyway.

Paul

Paul.. 1HD-T engine swaps don't interfere with ABS or Airbag functions... at least not the way I do em.
For those that pull the dash and swap in an early RHD cowl harness all bets are off.

To clear up the engine mystery, that engine is out of a 92 HDJ81 5spd. I played mix and match, the 5spd and part time case went on the back of my 1HD-FT.. and the A442F off my 1HD-FT went on the back of the 1HD-T. I added the later harness, Auto tranny linkage, TPS provisions etc (The TPS is there just not installed yet)
Also.. sorry to rain on the parade.. the Tcase is an HF2A (Full time, non Viscous coupled) NOT an HF1A part time.

See what happens when you go to work????

See what happens when you got to work for a day? you get schooled:-)

Thats alright I defiantly can't claim to know what I am doing most of the time. Its like I have always said...

I am not the master of any one thing but more than capable of doing anything I put my mind into well. Got good hands and can work fast.

The title of this build was Getting a 1HD-T finally! Truth be told the finally was in my head for most of the time. For the longest time my pride and Joy was 85' BJ60 we bought on the sunshine Coast many years ago. I was on Search and Rescue and 3 others on my team had 60's and 40's. I was hooked first time in. I always loved the 40's but it seemed with the 60 you got all that and a big backyard as well. Long story short my first cruiser was a 85 60 with 200 on the clock. like all good cruisers rust got the better of her so 2 years ago I took LC of the road got her a rust free 62 frame and tub converted it all over put the better looking round light front end with my 3B in. 1.5 years after I started the rebuild finally back on the road and We (the wife) decided we needed more seat and comfort provisions so up for sale it went.

At this point I had talked to sheldon about all kinds of conversions and Ideas I had. The guy just keeps listening and feeding the fire. Says he can't remember everything off the top of his head but I am not to sure about that.

This July after talking to sheldon and getting the list of wants from the wifey, i.e. ABS and Airbags for the kids is was pretty obvious we needed a 95-97 80 series. We nailed the market at the perfect time found a well lubed ( Bad front oil pump seal leak) 96 FZJ80 in Seattle for just over $6K. No lockers but for that price and condition couldn't go wrong.

Fixed the oil pump leak cleaned the rust free oil coated underside and set out looking for an engine and Tranny.

I was sold on putting an Isuzu 1HE4 in the truck through a guy in Portland. I still like the HP and Torque and the fact its an off the shelf North American engine. But the biggest seller was I could drop it off and pick it up 5 weeks later for about $13-14K all in. Thats about what it is going to cost for me to do the Toy conversion and I have to do the work.

So here I am as usual, a little behind the 8 ball about 2 steps behind where my research should be.

I know me though, if I don't start it I will never get it done. Once I am in I am good to go!

There's my wandering thoughts after a 12.5hr day trying to deliver a Hercules that still has along way to go before flight.

Cheers

awesome! having sheldon in your backyard definitely helps with this type of project as im sure he can now do em blindfolded with one hand tied behind his back :P

black HDJ80..my dream come true. i will live vicariously through you mountaincoolcruiser!

I think I'm going to need a taller fence. I still need both hands to do these conversions. IIRC I have done 6x FZJ/FJ80s myself.. #7 starting this month.. and throw in about 4x J80 conversions that I have worked on indirectly. I am still learning though, every conversion I learn something new or figure out some better cleaner way to do something. Some new ground will be broken on this conversion as Terry will be swapping in the Electronic A442F which uses a stand alone ECT computer in place of the A343F which uses the post 95 type Integrated Engine/Tranny ECU. So we'll be working together to sort that out. It should really open up some options for the folks with post 95s

Nice work.

My main interest, of course, is how is new OEM parts availability?

Unlike the 1HZ, the 1HD and variants were never in the NA pipeline. And the 1HD were such a short lived engine variant in the LC.

That would be my main concern with doing an epic swap like this.

Never a stock 1HD-T 80 in Canada. 1FZ is what it is, a thirsty, torquey, petrol I6. Headgasket every 300km or so and your good, but not nearly as good a mechanical 1HD-T.

Are there any factory diesel 80s in US or CAN?
Seems like everybody is thumb up going with this swap. Why? Isn't 1FZ is a good reputation engine? or is thirsty?

The 80 series Land Cruiser was never even sold in Canada. It was sold from 96-97 in Canada as a LX450 Lexus all the LX450's sold in Canada were equipped with lockers. We never got a factory diesel Toyota after the HJ60 in 87.

Beno- There are a few reputable sources for all parts for our trucks here in B.C., Sheldon figuring prominently among them (Still haven't swapped in that folding mirror!) My mechanic here ( Auto Tech Engine Brake Inc. ) has a large shop with 5 bays, three lifts and I have never had to wait for parts with him. Toyota Canada, generally, is uninterested in supporting them to the point of being somewhat rude- in my experience. Synopsis: Parts here are no problem and no more dear than NA stuff.

I assume Sheldon gets his parts from Japan (where the 1HD variants were available)?

Very cool then.
