Figured I would introduce my rig. I just purchased a 1992 FJ80 with 77,XXX miles on it. It has been a Hawaii vehicle all of its life. From what I can tell there has been little more that oil changes done. The PO did rotor cap/ plugs/wires in Dec. I am a jeep guy but wanted a little something more comfortable and something for the wife to drive as well. There is some typical island rust. The worst of the rust is in the pics. The rust on the rear passenger side door is from a crap repair job. I will be pulling the rear windows to repair the rust and add sliding rear windows while im at it. I have ordered a replacement lower tailgate to fix the rear. I will be tearing off the front and rear bumpers. The interior is in fantastic condition. Even the factory floor mats are in place. As soon as I get the paint done I will tint the windows to help keep sun damage down.

Today I pulled the steps....I got a whole $7 from the recycler !!!! I am attempting to track down the source of the rough idle. I pulled the air intake and hoses. The MAF was screwed so I took it apart and fixed it. In the interm I have duck taped the intake tubes due to some cracks. Cleaned the intake and TPS. I put it back together and still rough. I figure it is one of the vac lines. I will get to those in a few days.

The trans fluid was horrid as was the PS fluid. Just reaffirming the need to do all the fluids. Brake fluid is garbage and will be flushed when I do the new lines . When I rebuild the front axle I will repaint with POR-15. When it goes off for paint in a couple of weeks I will pull off as much as I can to mitigate some of the corrosion.

Started on adding some LEDs. Looking at doing a single row in grill above Toyota emblem. I used some cheap. 3in cubes to get a tad bit more light in the back. Also started replacing anything rubber under the hood. Got a pic of the trans fluid....it was nasty. Most of the vac lines got done. Still cant figure out why I have a rough idle. Suggestions?

I'm on oahu also, doing an ls swap currently on my 91. Do you need a MAF? O2 sensors? EGR port plug? Ive got the whole engine/tranny

Nice...Another guy on island. Got a pic of you rig? Im not too sure yet. Im am not throwing any codes so im still troubleshooting. Do you know anyone who may be parting one out ? I could really use a tailgate and passenger door. What engine are you swapping to?

Welcome to the site! If you are looking for a tailgate and PS door, there was a '91 FJ80 at a junkyard in Kapolei. Don't know if it's still there, but might have what you need. If you see this 80 series rolling around, that's me.

I'm guessing your rough idle could be from your mass air flow meter? Looking at your pictures I dont think the meter comes apart like that. You may have to do some soldering to get it back together. I could be wrong though.

Also, do you have a sunroof? Your Cruiser might have a 'Poverty Pack' option with the non sliding rear windows, no 3rd row seating, and no sunroof? Sort of rare, more so on a FZJ80 I think though.

Im not an expert on the FJ80's, so hopefully somebody else can chime in.

Thanks Jen...Good looking cruiser you have! Do you happen to remember the name of the yard? Leeward or Kapolei auto recycling sound right?

Sounds fitting to me having the poverty pack lol. No sun roof ( kinda happy about) and no factory roof rack (again, happy). The MAFM isnt really suposed to come apart but I repaired all the contacts and watched it function( open/close on start) as well as checked the oms per the FSM and everything checked out. With that being said, it still could very well be my issue. Maybe im expecting too much? I guess im comparing running "rough" compared to my 2011 wrangler. Thanks for the insight.

What Jen said, I don't remember the name of the junkyard though. I'm putting in a 6L lq4 from an 02 2500hd. Is the cel functional?

Yes, Kapolei Auto Recycling or Green Recycling is the name, they are both on the same property I think. I have only been there once, but my husband has been there a bunch of times getting interior parts off it for our 60. He said it was a '92 and thinks it was the same gray color you have. Hopefully it's still there, the owner gives pretty good deals.

I may need to take you up on some of the sensors. While driving from Eva it would almost die when I cam to a stop and then right back to normal rough idle.

Thanks to some awesome members I was able to get a replacement door and lower tailgate. I have started prepping for paint on fri. I have stripped most of the passenger side.

New lower tailgate

scavenging all the good from the old door

NEW DOOR!!!

Pretty much done stripping it down....Did some light rust remediation and looking to take it to paint/bod tomorrow

Oh look...a whole pile of parts

back window coming out

Worst of it

Broke one mount to the flare...oh well...i fixed it already

Neat rig. Love that it's got no sunroof, no roof rack, no third row, no sliding windows, no power seats. Has everything you need. Nothing you don't. Looks like you're moving quick on bringing it back to its former glory. Keep up the good work.

Rust is the enemy, good on you for fixing it and not just giving up. Finding used body parts were you are can't be easy. Ain't this forum great!

Keep up the good work! Very happy to see you saving this Cruiser!
