Replaced fuel cut off solenoid on the FJ60

Symptoms: While doing normal driving, the engine would die unless I kept playing with the gas pedal. Almost called a tow truck but the engine miraculously stayed on for me to get home.

Fix: Based on ih8mud and advice from a friend, I took out the fuel cut off solenoid for cleaning but discovered the wire was frayed. Bought a generic replacement from SOR.com. The only catch is that I had to reuse the old connector. Hopefully I soldered it well.

Everything has been fine after replacement.

New tires for the FJ60

The FJ60 is mostly a project car rarely driven. I checked the date on the tires to discover they are over 10 years old. The BFG KO2 285/75/16 were hand me downs from my FJ Cruiser. Since I plan to use the FJ60 on longer drives, I wanted fresh tires. I found a great deal on new BFG KO2 265/75/16. The smaller tires has given me better acceleration and steering. I wanted to try skinnier tires but I would need a slight skinnier rim. I got a good deal on the tires so I’m fine with it.

My rims are from my 80-series Land Cruiser with 1.5 spacers.

Roof rack

Picked up a no-name rack out of FB market place. I chose a flat rack to keep the height low for parking garages and minimize weight. I’m actually considering an RTT next year so this should work with it. The gutter mounts and the rack overall is stout.

Picked up this 270 freestanding awning on sale from Body Armor 4x4. Installed as low as I could without touching the doors. Sale was too good to pass up. This has built in legs in case the wind picks up. If it’s still on sale, know you can combine with their TXT sign up coupon.

I’m not into “detailing” but wanted to try something I read to bring back old paint.

1. Clay bar
2. Multiple coats of Meguire’s 7 glaze
3. Wax

These photos show the effects of the glaze. I haven’t waxed it yet. The glaze is not expected to last long. The wax will help with that.

I like how it looks even with my minimal experience.

How our FJ60 looks after a typical basic carwash.

After clay bar, we used Meguiare's 7:

The day after showed us the areas we missed but still a major improvement:

Picked up a Freespirit Recreation Aspen Lite XL. I chose this model for it's weight (110 lbs) and spaciousness. The price was right for me during the last Black Friday sale. With the rack, RTT and awning, it's slightly over 200 lbs. I can feel the difference when taking turns so I had to adjust my driving. The FJ60 is not my daily driver so the RTT does not get in the way of regular life things. I've already camped with it and enjoyed using it.

Picked up the fusible link from Cruiser Trash Parts, Cruiser Trash Parts - https://cruisertrashparts.com. Got it during his Black Friday sale. I could not use the included cool custom bracket due to an aftermarket electrical box blocking the way. I got it for peace of mind but I now notice the volt meter in the dash reads 12v on the dot before startup, It was always less than 12v for years. Nice to see it has made a difference no matter how slight.
