For sale: 7/1984 FJ40 LX. I have owned her for 12 years. I bought her in Australia and we brought her to America with us when we moved here in 2013. In Australia she was my daily driver, but here she has always been a second car. She always lived in South Australia, which is a very dry part of Australia and has always been garaged. When we moved to the US we moved to New Mexico, where she has also always been garaged. We moved to Florida two weeks ago, and that is where she is now: not long enough to have suffered any ill effects from the relentless humidity. She has 97,000 miles and looks stunning.

The good:
Very minimal rust. A very small amount just starting at the rear sill.
Air conditioning with brand new Toyota compressor (though it still needs to be charged. . I prefer taking the roof and doors off when it's warm so air con has never been a priority )
Power steering with synthetic ATF
Five speed
Three wipers with factory intermittent function
Full LX interior with no tears
Tachometer
Front quarter Windows, rear sliding Windows
Roll bar
Tinted glass
All new door weather stripping
CD player
Inclinometer
Digital clock
Warn 8274-50
OME springs with 33x10.50x15 BF Goodrich ATs
K&N air filter
Snorkel
All LED lights with Hella H4 headlamps
Fully rebuilt brakes with new disks, calipers and slave cylinders
Fully rebuilt axles with all new Toyota bearings on front and rear HJ61 axles with factory Toyota cable lockers
All new tie rod ends. This truck drives and tracks like a new car
New clutch master and slave cylinders
Leather wrapped steering wheel
New front window felt
Factory carb fully rebuilt by Jim Chenoweth
Runs great on either petrol/gasoline or gas/LPG
Transmission and transfer case shift perfectly and do not leak. Filled with synthetic 75w90
Absolutely stunning aluminium roof rack by awl-TEQ
Receiver hitch and trailer wiring
Fully rebuilt rear drive shaft
Heated driver's seat
Brand new GM HEI distributor
Brand new stainless battery tray

The not-so good:

-The cable lockers work great but I have not yet hooked them up to the interior handles
-The engine leaks a bit of oil from the rear main seal and uses a minimal amount but runs really well
-Everything works on this car except for the windscreen squirter. The tank holds fluid, but the pump has packed it in.
-the factory floor mat on the drivers'side has a small hole in it where my heel has worn through it
-the seat belt on the drivers' side is beginning to fray

I am asking $25,500 for her. She drives like a new car and will not disappoint. I built her to keep her and have a tremendous amount of memories in her. I have owned many, many Cruisers and she is by far my favourite. Unfortunately, family circumstances are such that I must sell her and this is to your advantage. I did not import her to sell her nor did I build her on the cheap to sell her. This was my Cruiser to keep for life and hand down to my son. Sadly, he and I will have to build another one day. She is located in Vero Beach, Florida and can be driven by appointment. I strongly encourage you to have her checked out, but I am confident any mechanic will be impressed (not withstanding the above-mentioned oil leaks). This is the last and the very best Land Cruiser Toyota ever built.

I personally don't mind the RHD. They are fun to drive and seem to get a lot more attention than a standard 40. You get use to them within a few seconds. I think a possible deterrent is the fact that it's a gas burner and not a diesel. I think most associate an Australian rig as a diesel. I do anyway. Either way that is a gorgeous 40 you have. Would love to have that parked in my garage. Only one problem, my wife would make me sleep in it if I did. GLWS!

Wiley...I am confused, your wife should at least let you choose which Land Cruiser you sleep in? ;) For me, as soon as read RHD in a listing...I take a pass, sorry mate but others like Wiley are cool with RHD. GLWS!

@Chamba : I'm not understanding why after weeks of this you're simply not tossing-in the cards & keeping her. You had towed her to here, all the way from the other side of the world, as you were so attached to her. It seems you've a stable income, being that you're an airline pilot - that you perhaps could somehow make amends to take care of the balloon payment back in Oz via some other method ? ... Pilots genuinely make a solid income. Your '84 rig is totally Gorgeous !! - but there's NOT anyone else who will appreciate her as much as you do. It's you, your family & your 40 who share all the intimate stories from two sides of the world. Physically depart from her, and you cry internally like all the others end-up doing. Why not make ends meet as best you can, elsewhere, that you can personally, one day, physically pass-on this genuine-to-you family story to your own children ??

What gets me down is having read somewhere previously that you were willing to trade her for a late 80's Grand National (or something like that) ?? ... If so, that puts your hardship story way out of twist.

I join the others in believing she's not easily selling here in the States due to her being RHD. And that coupled to her not being an Aussie BJ40. If she were mine, I'd try a good bit harder to find or determine a way to keep her well into the future, within immediate family. And of course to keep her under a moisture-proof car cover within an enclosed garage, there in Florida, while not driving her & reflecting fondly upon your adventurous & lovely, down-under past with the same vehicle you're still driving. ~Skydog.

Skydog,
A family member stole $70,000 from me when I sold a property; frankly. That's really the sole reason: I'm trying to minimise the effect financially. Add to that the nameless airline for which I fly is about to IPO and we're pretty close to a strike action over protracted labour issues so I need to maintain a level of savings. The family will be back in Australia for the American school holidays and I'm hoping to take my July off without working to go home too (otherwise I'll work my holiday which results in double pay ).
The grand national would be easy to sell, as would a late 60s/early 70s muscle car. That's why I would consider a trade.
I had an appraiser come by the house for a potential buyer yesterday. Very impressive how thoroughly they went through her. I can recommend them to anyone looking at a collector car.
I cleaned her up in preparation, so here are some interior shots. Warning:RHD vehicle so some may wish to avert their eyes.

Just my opinion ( i dig the truck as it sits)

but at $25-30k, you are competing with stock LHD FJ40s. Yes, Americans are scared to death of anything they don't understand (RHD, nuclear power plants, etc)

Some stock steel wheels and hubcaps would go a long way in restoring the classic look that collectors are looking for.
Also, the rear fender flares with (cut rear fenders?) hurts the value too.

I say keep it.

If my partial trade offer works for you down the road keep me in mind. In the mean time it is inspiration for me to sell my 1973 Z28 and get into a great cruiser, RHD and all. I think a set of factory 16" wheels with 285's or 255's may look a bit more in keeping with the tall skinny stock look.

The LX never came with hub caps or splitties. They all came with chrome 16" mags like US 60s came with (though here they were 15" in the US).

I wasn't keen on cutting the wells either but in oz you'll get your peepee spanked pretty hard if your tyre sticks out at all.

@Chamba : I assure you, if I had the money; if I had ANY money, I'd be THE ONE to purchase this rig from you, right-hand drive or not. It's everything I'd wish for. I flat-out assure you.

But I'm keeping my fingers crossed hard that you keep her. She belongs to you & your soul.

Southwest Airlines is based out of Orlando. I've a few friends who are captains on that airline. Would you like to speak with one of them regarding Southwest ? .. I've also friends who are pilots and/or captains on Delta. And I've another friend who is a director of an airlift company based in Melbourne, FL. That is, if you don't mind flying in some of the world's hot spots, perhaps that might be a lucrative avenue for you?

I know absolutely nothing about the widely popular "Go Fund Me" program; where, others who are wealthy seek to help yet others out. Or, perhaps with a bit of cold-calling, you could locate a multi-millionaire business man, who has his own business jet, and you look into joining his/her "team." With stipulation that this more intimate type, small business relationship that the new employer help fund for your past loss - and that you hand-shake deal that you'll work those funds back to this new employer through additional sweat equity, etc ?

I really don't know, because I'm in a perpetual sunken boat of my own. But I know a good thing when I see one. And your rig is just that. I'm sensing this rig of yours is quite literally bonded to you. And rightfully so.

~Marc

Thanks Marc,
I have a good mate who is a check airman at southwest and I'm sure I could get on with them. I am happy with my current airline and I'm very senior so I get whatever lines I want. I also love flying the Airbus, and the pilot groupis pretty bloody good all around. I'm just not willing to start over again so I'll have to ride out these labourissues and hope for the best.

I have thought long and hard about this and I could not agree with you more about my and my son 's attachment to lexie. I think my fear of debt is greater than my angst at losing my favourite FJ40.

Once we get through this contract negotiation process and return to hiring and upgrading I'm sure I'll get another RHD cruiser (I prefer RHD because I'm 6'6" and LHD is hard for me to shift ). Then my son can help me restore it and we'll make it special. Granted, it won't have the memories that lexie has, but it will show my son what can be done with some patience and grit. We're building a tree fort right now for him so he is seeing this. It'll be a lesson which carries over well I hope.

PM sent for finding Lexie a new home. She'll be in capable hands, well respected, garaged and with like siblings.

Give me a shout to discuss what's best for us. See text for number.

that looks like the perfect garage stall for the 40 under the fort. man i think you're crazy for letting this thing go.

@Chamba : Let's say this. Let's pretend you did not have Lexie, yet have the same financial situation. How would you then creatively & legally go about the situation in that scenario ?

You & I are both knowing others have gotten their own selves into similar or worse financial complications (myself being one of them), although do not have any such possession; yet, they, themselves seem to somehow make it to the other side of the river. Could you at least first set up a meeting with a lawyer / attorney, and perhaps learn of some alternative avenues that can be taken, while keeping Lexie within your family ?

As a good friend of @Chamba this is making me chuckle very hard right now. I won't explain why though, but it's funny.

Whoever buys this will get the nicest set of lockout hub dials on earth though! Those came out really nicely.

Somebody buy this rig before I run up to Vero and make a purchase. BTT for a killer 40.

Looking forward to finally owning a 40, and a fine example at that. I have much to learn about them still, but will tap into the forum for advice as always. Thanks for the kind words and expressed concern about Lexie and Chamba. Time to dig out the stash of old Toyota Trails I purchased years ago and read up after the dust settles.
