We've got an 1980 and a 1982 Toyota pickup on the ranch, both of them, when you pull the hood release in the cab, the hood doesn't' popup... Makes them a pain to work on when you are alone. Got sick of that , want to fix it...

My understanding is that it's the larger spring on the back side of the hood latch.

Can i get a replacement spring any where?

can I buy new complete latches anywhere, i found a couple on ebay, but I'm worried a 38ish year old used one will have the same problem.

Thanks.

You might still be able to get that spring from Toyota.

If the spring is not broken, I would still think it would work just fine. The large spring is fairly heavy duty.

Have you tried giving the hood latches a really good cleaning?

The mechanism may just be dirty enough where the latch sticks.

The hood latch on my 1987 truck was starting to barely "pop" the hood a few years ago. Spending a few minutes scrubbing the latch and lubricating pivot points solved my issue. The hood "pops" great now.

:wrench:

Mine don't pop worth a dang. Just so you know, that latch didn't change much in 20 years. I think mine came from a Gen2 4Runner. It still doesn't pop and I think it has to do with the alignment.

This is the truth. Clean and lube it first. Adjust the hood bumpers so the hood sits flush with the fenders, then adjust the latch it self till it is comfortable and pops up again.

If a new spring is ever required, don't forget your local full-service hardware store. Mine here has drawer cabinets with many types and sizes. Of course, there is also online- but it's easier to match at a store...

I would clean them very well. Then spray them down with Ace Hdw. brand of oil, saturate them several times,. Then spray with litheum grease. That should do the trick . Gman.

My 1980's hood release cable is lying in the grill. You can either put a ziptie around the tab that forces it open and pull that through the grill or just stick your fingers through it and push on it. I've never had mine working and I can get my hood open quickly and easily enough.
