Hey! Welcome! Where are you located? IT would be cool to get our PNW locals together once the madness is over!
Ah I am located down here in beautiful southern Oregon!

Also I'm sorta glad I'm not alone currently in the great endeavor known as electrical hell. I was dealing with the tail lights not but 2 weeks ago myself. (Thank you previous owner/s)

Going to take her to Costco! 😷

Wait ! Earlier you said you were trying to contain spending and now you're going to COSTCO ! Last week I went there for dog food, $270 later I'm in the parking lot loading the car. Good work on the wiring. Ed

Oh dude! $450!! And that’s not buying any new flashlights which I seem to do every time I visit. Loaded up on staples. Meat, beer, chips… My girls eat a lot too. It’s amazing how quiet my rig was driving home with a cart full of Costco crap covering up all the rust holes! I may get one of those thick rubber mats that go in horse stalls to put back there for a while. If anything just to keep the noise down.

I’m just getting sensitive to FJ40 spending since I told my wife we really need to start cutting back and within half an hour I was ordering new weatherstripping! It’s essential though! 😕

But weatherstripping *is* essential! Otherwise.....it's just rattle hell.

Enjoy, have fun. I can sense the good times in the posts and pictures. Amazing the joy these things bring. Thank you for your build thread - threads like this keep fires under me to keep mine going. Funny, I was going to start this last 78 with a buffing and mechanical check - and now I am in the middle of a frame-off.

Haha! I came really close to that actually! I can see how it happens so easy. I hit my head while wire brushing one day and came to my senses.

So… Two full days and I can’t tell you how bad my shoulders ache right now. A little more than half done with the paint restoration. Taking tomorrow off. Amazing results though. Here’s a before and after.

Throttle stuck almost wide-open today on my way to get more sandpaper. Luckily was on a 50 mph road with no stop sign in sight. Couple sharp jabs on the gas pedal and it freed it but dang… I’ll have to figure out where that was binding. 😳. Maybe just go through and lube all the throttle linkage.

Eric,

Do you plan on showing your handiwork to the person you bought the truck from? For the first 10 or 15 years after I got Ruftoys I often thought about trying to track down the guy I bought it from to let him know what a life-changing event it was for me.

I guess it depends on the individual. I've experienced both sides. For example, in any cruiser I have restored, I have really enjoyed hearing back or receiving pictures. Always cool. However, I have sent people the same, and was met with a snub/disinterest, or even a "stop sending this stuff". I hope for Eric's sake, the PO is cool and interested, especially given the great attitude and adventure it has seemingly been for his family.

I was just thinking about that yesterday while driving home from Costco. The PO is a good guy. I sent him the video of my daughter and I getting it running and he seemed stoked by that. I haven’t sent any updates since but I will. It had been in his family since the early 80s so I’m sure he’d appreciate it’s new home. I thought about sending my build thread but that might be weird plus I’d have to go back and make sure I didn’t make any negative PO comments. I may have regarding the paint but then I was cursing everything when I was working on that.

I think you need to be careful when contacting a PO that you don’t sound like you’re bragging or being condescending at all. Prob should be careful not to criticize previous work cause you didn’t own it then and a person can do whatever the heck they want to their own rig. Nobody forced you to buy it! Of course I’m referring to an honest seller. If you were scammed or lied to.....may not be so sensitive.

Been down for a couple weeks. I decided I needed to take a stab at fixing the parking brake. The cable had been cut off and tucked up in the frame and just a small piece coming out of the backing plate at the transfer case. Ordered a new cable and shoes from @65swb45 and went to town. As always, I went in blind... no idea what I’m doing or what to expect. It didn’t take long to figure out that this thing was messed up pretty good. The housing where the cable goes into the backing plate was completely trashed. Opened up like a tin can. Not sure why or how but no way for the new cable to seat in there. Also a bolt broken off in the speedometer housing that hadn’t been replaced. One of the shoes was missing a clip… Anyway it wasn’t going to be an easy job like I thought. Took it all apart and realized I’d have to get back on the phone with Mark. Ordered a new Speedo housing with the dual seal and a new backing plate. Hopefully I’ll get it back together smoothly.

Drive shaft question... I had a heckuva time getting the driveshaft off the parking brake drum at the transfer case. Couldn’t get it to back off the studs. Ended up taking out the zerk fitting and used a couple pry bars. Squeezed a bunch of grease out of the zerk hole in the process. Is that normal? Should that sliding yoke (I think that’s what it’s called) slide a little easier? was thinking maybe I should take it apart and clean and re-grease. I did some searches on the forum and couldn’t find anything on how to do that. Don’t wanna pull it apart and regret it. Looked in the FSM but I can’t really find much. Can I just pull it apart and clean and re-grease?

Sent some photos and an update to the PO today. He seemed pleased. 👍

My left front fender is full of rust and Bondo so after tracing all the wires to the flasher I went back and started at the fender. I hooked a wire to where the light housing attaches to the fender and then ran it to a decent ground under the hood. All of a sudden the lights were brighter! OK I’m getting somewhere. Flasher still doesn’t work… Neither does the larger bulb. Smaller bulbs are working and bright as can be. Also the hazards flash except the left front... Don’t worry, the red grounding wire is just temporary as I troubleshoot. (Yes I changed the bulb 😁)

Did you just use a red wire for a ground?

The Horror The Horror :)

Is that gear oil leaking onto your parking brake? Looks like it to me. You should replace the output seal on your transfer case. It’s an easy replacement and will keep your parking brake shoes from getting covered with gear oil, causing your parking brake to fail.
