Update

Now have about 700 clicks on the clock. Took the family through a loop of the Bend-Sisters area for a good shakedown. So far, so good. Attached is a picture from along the way.

I don't get it - where's the rust? :grinpimp:

And that paint is way too shiny!

Are you sure that's a real FJ40?

Envy is a horrible thing.

Got any specs you can share on the paint - brand/color-mix, etc. the shop used for the 653 olive brown?

Love that overhead shot in post #11.

Dave,
Your attention to detail is excellent and the marriage of non-stock components was clearly done with a lot of thought and understanding of the final product you designed in your head. Well done, sir. Truly one of the most beautiful FJ40 I’ve seen on this site. Just wish I could see it from a much closer perspective. Enjoy your creation in its perfect state now, because you know as well as everyone else that s*** happens when a vehicle is driven.

Dupont Centari - Single Stage Acrylic Enamel - old school. I am not sure of the mix, but I bet I can get at it by looking at one of the cans. I will check if you are really interested.

Thanks. The idea behind the build was apply a few pieces from across the model years, but they all had to essentially bolt-in. I am in awe of the stuff that some of the folks on this list can fabricate, but that wasnt the mission on this one. Agree on the driving it bit. Like your handle suggests....it is all about the journey. The process is everything...the end product is a nice reminder of the work.

Nice! Like the color.

Thanks, me too.

Beautiful cruiser. Just one question, why didn't you use the original engine?

Thank you. The original engine was fine, but tired. I had access to a late model 2F and in terms of development, the late 85-87 2F engines are the most "advanced". Wasnt really that big of a deal actually, but I was going to rebuild one of them, and the late model was the natural choice.

Thanks - if you don't mind looking at some point it would be helpful. No rush, paint is a good while out for me. Hard to tell from photos but your color looks spot-on. Some PO did minor body-shop paint work on one area of my 78 and it's not even close to the original paint. Looks close in certain kinds of light...

Also planning to do the exact same OME/tire thing - is everything (shackles, bushing, etc.) OME?

Thanks again,
Gus

G'day,

That is a truly gorgeous truck. You mentioned 'old school' in regard to your choice of acrylic paint. Was this a deliberate decision, so that the finished paint seemed more authentic. As opposed to a 2k paint?

Great effort.

Cheers,

Ben

Thanks. Deliberate decision. Plenty of good reasons to go base/clear, but I have always been happy with single stage and I like the profile of the paint.

Dave, Awesome job you've done another beautiful job on a FJ40.

nice

Truely a fine job. Well done, very professional work.
Your level of detail is amazing.
I would not even begin to guess how many hours you put into that rig.
I have been working on mine since March 15th and it has consumed every spare minute I have had.
I am not sure anyone can appreciate the research that one has to go through to get the details taken care of.
Great job and congratulations on the finish.
You can ride with pride now.
