I think this thread has gone off track

The discussion is of the full time 4wd units that came on several prototype cruisers sporting a borgwarner case

@n2666s I see factory drive flanges ... they came that way and taken off for warn hubs ... or husky or other aftermarket :meh:

Those are just drive plates that all FJ25s/FJ40a/FJ45s/FJ55s were imported with these to the US until later in the seventies. Most now have free wheeling hubs added. Just like Johnny beat me too. Full time 4WD happens in the transfer case. Those have 4 high and 4 Low. But they also have a open and locked. Similar to a locker that runs open or locked. That's the magic that makes it a full time 4WD. Please show some pictures of the transfer case.

agree "off track" :hmm: trying to figure out where to put/share pix as requested by other member .
the front end is shot and have never rebuilt it as as far as I know came that way along with the Fairy; need to know what parts are needed for rebuild; only two options I have at transfer case are 4WD hi or 4WD low :( it has always run Locked have never been able to use it "open" will get pix of transfer case and post; all other pigs have seen have 4WD hi 4WD low and 2WD

There is a possibility of a full-time 40 here in NC that was Toyota produced. If I can get to it next week I will try to take a photo or two.

Actually it is JoeTLC's brother's truck.

It is a Quadratrac prototype from Toyota. When Toyota decided not to produce it the truck was given to a shop class in CA who proceeded to tear it down and rebuild it more than once. It was then sold to someone in TN then to John who has it now. The truck is green and has a total of 12,000 miles on it. I have permission to take a bunch of photos and post them here which I will do tomorrow or Monday.

I know where you got that aux tank Lou! That was a LONG time ago!

Your transfer case should be part time. I wonder if somebody messed with something when they installed the Fairey that messed things up. My guess would be that they installed the front wheel drive shift collar backwards on the main output shaft. That would make it be in 4wd all the time.

If you think the Fairey might need servicing, I still offer to do that, but only in house.

@David1947 yep thats the one!

great more pics the better? is it registered ?

I know somebody with the other one :)

Great to know both are in known locations and not lost to history. They are to rare to be lost.

Does seem strange only the two have ever shown up. This new information about both being on the west coast to start with. Will be curious on how much rust is on it compares to the one that stayed out west. Believe the worse rust on that one is the hold which is actually off a later 40 because the original hood was lost. It sufferers more small dings and dents. Never heard that was was taken apart and put back together either.

As for pictures would be interested in how the cable was run from the dash to the transfer case that switch from open to locked.

Still think this set with Torsen diffs in a FJ55 would have sold well in the US. They had full floating rear axlea by 75 which the Torsen requires. This is what the 98/99 LX470 was minus a limited slip front diff because of the independent suspension.

Saw the truck today. This a unicorn in every sense of the word, does have the Quadratrac and is almost rust free. Another poster mentioned the hood, it is the original hood from everything we could see. The only bad things are the tires need replacing and the last owner put a roof rack on it that is a real POS. With a good cleaning the truck would be easily sold.

it is the beige one in Arizona that has the hood replaced. That one is much less molested than this one. Has the original wheels, hub caps, floor mats, door mirrors, skid plate, heater (has both), original exhaust, no radio with stock blank, nothing has been repainted and padded dash. That one only has 4,500 miles on ir. Like any rust free cruiser sure it could easily be sold. Personally think believe they stock be in a museum. With in a few days will be around the computer with my pictures I took of it twelve years ago. I don't believe it's been sold since.

John said during my visit that he heard there were actually 12 which were converted. Who knows, after 40+ years the records and memories might have disappeared. As for the trucks, they do belong in a museum or at least on loan/display like at the Land Cruiser museum. Sad to see a piece of Land Cruiser history stored in a warehouse. But what do I know? The owner can do whatever he wants to do with it. At least its location is known. I would probably store it away and keep it as close to stock as it is with an occasional wash and drive around the block.

I do know M42 does not show up as transmission on any Toyota parts records. The under the hood VIN plaques list the transmission as M42. I am curious where John heard their were twelve? Would have to see if I can dig up my old emails but do not remember him even knowing about the one in AZ until @JohnnyC contacted him. Maybe Johnny can shed some light? He seems to be in the know.

I can't speak for the 12 number, all I know is the one I saw and the other one @Living in the Past has knowledge of. Nice truck, tried to buy it while I was there but John wasn't interested at all.

Did get a tour of the back warehouse but was sworn to secrecy for any goodies salted away there. I would like to have a week free in there.

I only know of there being two... I would be surprised if there were more ... I had been surprised before

I had talked to both Borg Warner as well as Toyota’s power trans? division guy named Paul he was actually a mudder as well

Early on in toyota auto transmissions they were built by borgwarner later to become Aisin Warner division toyota

He had ‘0’ knowledge of the prototype tlc’s. And he found ‘0’ info from his sources

A Mr Obbu? had knowledge of the early BW working with toyota on several projects around that time and earlier and said there were car prototypes that were ‘given’ to schools and universities when they were done as they didn’t want to have them show up at a dealer for service. They were unserviceable for parts. And therefor could be tlc’s as several types were tested and evaluated.

Which brings me to there are more ‘cars’ maybe the 12 that were modified ... not 12 tlc’s ... 12 Toyota’s

:meh: conjecture... NOBODY knows most upper guys who knew what was what are retired or past on ... literature and paperwork are in boxes inside boxes in back room basements of toyota administration buildings ... good luck finding anything

It is truly a needle in a haystack

I look at even BW and AW ... same thing no knowledge of the tranny’s or being adapted to toyota ... nothing

That went.... on and off for several years looking into them

At am at a loss to find more info... at this point .... somebody may read these threads and be like ‘I got a car’ with the same odd tranny and I heard this

Love to find more ... kinda like finding an AK10 lol my dream truck :)
