Thank you for the extra back story. There might be more to the story but like you said the participants may be retired or no longer with us with their knowledge buried in back room boxes. No matter what the rest of the story might be, I was privileged seeing a piece of Toyota history and finding one of the two FJ40 unicorns.

Maybe Toyota Trails would be interested in an article about the trucks.
 
They are a little more than the regular rare toyota unicorn ... they are more like the Uber rare Toyota PegaLlamacorn ...

NO; she was NOT a constant 4WD..............:rolleyes: transfer case was stuck in 4WD HI; as Mark "
"[65swb45]"pointed out front 4wd shift collar was installed backwards on the main output shaft; got things loosened rearranged and now am in "neutral" on highway and can shift into 4wd hi or low. big difference in gas millage also:)

Even though Toyota had a great vehicle, Subaru and AMC were already going away from gear to gear 4WD.
