I have a 1968 fj40 that I am in the process of building up to be a daily driver. So far the only thing I know for sure is the car spent time in Colombia between the field repairs and pesos I found in it.

My plan is put in a 5.3 Chevy and a nv4500, I'm not sure on the transfer case yet, I'd like to do a split case, if that ends up working the best.

Right now I want to put disk brakes on at least the front. Are there kits available that would work on a 68 axle or am forced to do a swap?

If I do swap out axles what would be my best bet?

I've been looking at Dana 44/60's mostly because of how easy they are to find. But the width might be an issue for me.

Also if there or any other good mods that would help make this a daily driver to handle Arizona highways and trips to Colorado let me know.

Search for "knuckles out" + "disc brake swap". You need all the parts from an FJ60, including the knuckles and the birfs, out to and including the locking hubs, as well as a knuckle rebuild kit from the likes of Valley Hybrids or Cruiser Outfitters.

This is a no-cut, no-weld solution that uses your existing driveshaft, diff and axle housing.

That sounds like a great option. Where would be the best place for parts like that? Craigslist/eBay/ and classifieds o. This site?

That 68 may still have the ball and claw axles (US 68 should have been a birf but). Which means it'll likely not swap to disks easily. I'd find a later model 40/55 whole axle for it.
This site is generally one of the best places to find parts I have seen. However, craigslist has some good scores periodically as well.

that's what I was thinking, either find a complete later disc axle or use a 69+ axle then do the knuckles out. just remember the 79+ axle with have a different gear ratio than your 68
