Years ago I stumbled across a Bring A Trailer listing for an LV. HERE is the link and below is a picture.

Using the internet I tracked down the new owner and followed his build on HIS WEBSITE. I even emailed him a couple times hoping he'd be willing to sell me some parts off his donor rig, but sadly I never heard back.

Well, it looks like he's finished his build and is selling it at the Meacum Auction in August (lot R354) being held in Monterey, CA. I'm not tech savvy enough to post pictures of the finished product shown on Meacum's website but I hope someone reading this post is and will take a few minutes to attach them.

Colin, if you are reading this, I'm amazed at the quality of the finished product. I wish I could see it in person and even more so that I could afford to bid on it. Best wishes with the auction.

From the Mecum ad: "The FJ45LV on offer here is regarded as the one of the finest and most correct examples in existence."

And . . . "Very few ever get properly restored in the classic sense of the word – that is, truly restored to the exact same condition they were on the showroom floor when new."

The engine compartment alone belies those lofty claims and the slick sales job.

I also like how the seller mocks others by saying, "When most people "restore" a vintage Land Cruiser, they take a lot of liberties, and that is being kind." As if the seller didn't take some of those exact same liberties.

Whatever.

$6,600 in 2009! Funny how the market has changed.... Nice truck.

With 3000 hours into it, I'll be surprised if it meets reserve in Monterey. Just a hunch. He's probably hoping for $100k.
I think that it is nice enough to hit around $100k. Maybe 75-95k?

I don't disagree, but not in Monterey. They're buying up $1m Ferrari's and such. I'm not sure they'd understand the LV. I guess we'll see.

Web page now shows estimated sales price of $140-160k. I hope it sells that high. But, the claim that it's exact in every detail irritates me. Especially the part where it says they used two 1967 FJ40's for correct hardware and clamps. Look at the rad hose clamps on this thing. Hardware store clamps. You can still buy the original style clamps (but Phillips head) at the dealer. I can count at least a dozen things (albeit minor) that are not "exact in every detail"

The sad thing is that the people that spend $150k on a cruiser don't know enough about them to realize the seller is full of crap.

It is an incredible example and probably the finest out there. I am flying out Wednesday and will be watching this go through. Still building mine. Going into paint now. Get the wheels back. Not an original one but user friendly modern mods (drivetrain etc)

To me the whole collector car market is artificial, its really the rich who are driving this craziness, yes a very nice lv comes to auction, to me its worth around 40 k in the real world. But Joe shmo who has never even heard of an lv steps up and bids with another rich ding dong because they have to have a cool vintage suv in there 18 car garage, and it goes to six fugures? How is this an accurate way to judge what a car is worth, the auctioneers certainly like it, and hype it up, to get there piece of the pie. If you go on ebay and check completed listings, you will see that 90% of the high priced vehicles do not sell. It really sucks for young adults who want to by an old fj or muscle car and have to pay 10k for a rusty shell. I have been into porsches for 25 years, look how crazy the early aircooled cars are fetching? Are they really selling?

Another example would be that LV that was owned by some country singer guy that sold at BJ for like $89,000. It appeared again for sale years later for less the $50K. Like stated above, it's the richie rich type that cause these artifial spikes in vehicle values.

Well, there is truth in all that is spoken here. A few years ago I went up to the Barrett-Jackson, and sat with a guy who always wanted a 1970 Mustang Mach 1, and he paid a mere 125,000 for one. So, what my point is that all of these vehicles, muscle, V.W, Porsch, FJ's are all going into collector world. Catching the right time for highest price will vary. One thing is for sure, the FJ series is never going to be like it was when you could get one cheap and do whatever. Face it.

WOW.....I am so happy that these vehicles are finally getting the status they deserve. I just wish I would have had the insight to buy more long ago.
I have a real 45 in reasonable shape the first car I might make some money on in the future, however I sure am enjoying having and driving it around once in a awhile.
