Well, it was kinda arts and craft day at the house today :D Got up this morning and started on the tranny hump again. I made paper templates out of tag board so I could make the pieces off of that. It took more time making the paper parts vs the metal ones, but paper is a lot easier to work with. After I had what I wanted in paper I took each piece and a made a metal one. Tacked everything together and then made a template for the top. Once the top was made in steel I tacked that in and then welded it solid. After it was welded solid I drilled holes for the cage nuts through my new hump and the floor. Welded cage nuts underneath and then bolted it down. Done with it for the most part.

I may be a little premature of me to do this......I know the Lokar shifter will fit fine through the center, but the 4 wheel drive shifter may be a problem. The tranny hump still might be to close on the passenger side. I guess you gotta start somewhere. Worst case scenerio is that I have to bring that side out, I still use what I have already built.

More parts came. Lokar shifter, neutral safety swith, LED ring and boot and the electronic shift indicator. Electric 2100 CFM fan with the relay. Drivers side battery tray from Man-a-fre. Bolted it in for the time being, but I thin I'm going to wait to drill the 2 holes through the center. Just in case something moves from now, the body coming back off and on again, I think it would be easier and smarter to drill those 2 holes when it's put together for the last time.

Matt, looking great, how do you plan to grind those welds in the corners?

If I choose to I will use a die grinder with the carbide bit. I may not, just for the fact all of that will be covered with thermal carpet padding and carpet. And I don't mind the little bit of extra materal keeping it together.

Question: Anyone have a really nice set of FJ55 mirrors they want to sell? I've got a set here I got about a year ago, and they will work, but they a have a little hairline crack on each one about a 1/2" long.

I am going to use these and get the holes drilled in the door, and I'm sure they will polish up great. Just thought someone might have a set they want to get rid of?

Thanks, Matt

Matt, once again your fabrication skills have amazed me. EXCELLENT work on that trans tunnel!

I had to look up WTH tag paper was... For anyone else that is curious...

Definition: Tag paper is a dense grade of paper that is strong, durable. Tag paper has a basic size of 24" x 36".

Examples: Tag paper is typically used for hanging tags such as store tags on clothing or other products.

One last thing. What was the part number for those cage nuts? If that number was given to the local ACE store could they order some in? Would be cheaper than the local nuts and bolts place as they have large minimum orders for 'weird' things :)

I get the Tag paper from the local Ben Franklin store here in town, comes in 24" x 36" sheets like you said. I think about .79 cents a sheet, I used a little over a sheet on that tranny hump.

I'll check on the part #, but not sure if your local Ace store could order it for you? My Ace store is larger than average and we deal in a LOT of comercial industrial type stuff. I will get you a part # either way and a company name you should be able to order them from, you may have to get a 100 +, I had to.

If you have to order large qty's and only need a few I could sell them for about .50 cents each + shipping. I am shipping some today for another mud member who PM'd me ;)

ANother option to the captured nut thing Matt is using is a Nutzert. I use mine all the time working on this stuff. It's a pop-rivet type of tool that inserts a threaded insert and can be used in a blind situation. It won't float like matt's but is another option. I have not found metric in the nutzert brand I use so far but haven't looked all that hard.

And Very nice tranny hump! Puts the flat plate I screwed down to the floor on the FJ40 to shame..

Matt,

Your thread was the inspiration for me to document my A440F tranny rebuild for the 80.

Sincerely, Jim.

I think this type of response from this thread is great! :)

I've seen others post similiar responses here a few times and I've had a lot of PM's and emails. People commenting on how it got them going on there own project or what they saw helped them with there own stuff that there working on. This is exactly why I did and am documenting my work, to hopefully help others.

I've said it before, but I will say it again. This is an absolutely perfect venue to exchange ideas and information to help each other out. Personally I think this type of information is exactly what ih8mud.com was designed for. And of course thanks has to go out to Woody for starting mud, maintaining it and giving us a place to exchange info.

Just think how many other 1000's of threads have helped and inspired others to work on there own stuff also.......really amazing.

I went back an looked at your seat, and remembered you're going with buckets, you probably won't need that.

You could add an FJ60 or late model FJ40 center console, with the rear heater bulit in...or even an 80 series, cup holder, spot for your spare change, high-low blower...the possibilites are endless ;)

FJ60's had the rear heater built into the console you say? Where do I learn more about this?

It takes a few days for me to stew over things, but now you got me thinking.......

Anyone have one they need to get rid off? Treeroot, how about that one in your your yard? ;)

Not yet. Poser (Steve) is planning on stopping by on Friday for the entire day, I think the plan was to play trucks all afternoon. :) I know he's got a lot of experience in that dept.....might put him to work.

Thanks for the link, helpfull!!

'85 and later had the heater in the centre console. I think I have one, let me look tonight. I also have a new in box set of NOS factory Fj55 mirrors I've been saving for the right project. You can have 'em if you want. I'll be sending a crate of Christmas gifts to my family in Kenora this week, let me know and I'll toss them in.

Cheers,
Bruce

No, I was thinking of the switch, the heater is under the passenger seat I believe, at least on an '84.
