So i got my thermostat from Cruiser Outfitters. It’s a crossover 3B, 13BT, 2H, 12HT
My memory is a bit foggy, I remember in past the rubber split gasket used to come with the thermostats.
Cruiser Outfitters website they are not needed. So the two I received don’t have the rubber gaskets.
But since my water pump on my 13BT crapped out I’ve pulled everything off for that.
There on the thermostat is a rubber split gasket. So whats the deal? Needed or not? My experience is,
if it came off, it goes back on. So I can re use this one, but I’d prefer to replace it with new.
Does anyone have a part number outside of Toyota that would work?

I used a paper gasket on my B motor recently and it worked. Didn't have a gasket to begin with, which is not surprising considering it didn't have a thermostat either. D'oh!

I don’t doubt your website. I’ve got that paper gasket coming. Just curious as to why would
my 13BT have this gasket installed then? I’ve got the 13BT motor for my 40 sitting here, so I’m
going to pull it apart and check. I know whatever is in there is original.

@cruiseroutfit is the 16343 housing to head gasket the same for 3B and 13BT then?
Is 16343-56023 /20/22 same gasket?

@cruiserpilot

ToyoDYI show a changed part number:

16341-56020 for 11/1984-07/1988 (google shows paper gasket)
16341-56030 for 08/1988-12/1989 (google shows o-ring gasket even though EPC diagram shows the paper style)

The lower thermostat housing has 4 part number changeups in the 1984-1989 period and the upper looks to be the same through the run. If that means you can use either gasket style I dunno. O-ring style in mine when I've changed it in the past, so new 16341-56030 o-ring style is what I've put back in. Mines a blue block and 1989.

Yes on the gasket that is between the thermostat housing and head being the same as mentioned above.

Well, you've been doing this a while. Holy old thread, Batman!! So post 88 seems to be a change over year. I'm going to
be putting this all back together today. Certainly checking the lip inside the housing to see if mine is different from one to the
other. I have a friend, heavy duty mech ( on holiday now ) but he was almost there finding me a correct size. The o-ring is 3" or 76 mm OD

Its not generally a traditional o-ring, it's a rubber gasket with a grooved interior where it clips on the thermostat. But it's not used on the early housing with that thermostat, paper gasket only. BJ74's thru 8/88 (so thru MY 88) use the gasket. It's possible you have a late model (8/88-11/89 which would be MY 1989+) thermostat housing combo. We stock the rubber ring too.

I recall that thread now after reading it again. Nice to see confirmation and some follow-up/further info on that old thread. My learning curve never stops; All I gotta do is forget about the original learning curve and read it again!

That thread at least proved my memory wasn’t completely tequila soaked. I’ve gone over
my parts now and after I replace the inner hub seals on the 60 FF and get the new brakes on
I will get that 13BT back up and running.

I didn’t see that split ring gasket on your site earlier. But when I got those thermostats from you I
thought the gaskets were included, just never looked. So the question now is if that rubber split
ring gasket isn’t for this thermostat. Which thermostat should I have?
Is there a VIN I.D. Link so I can run my VIN?

It's not yet on CruiserTeq.com but notated on the gasket offering:

The "o-rings" have never been included with thermostats in my recollection, always a separate part#. In the case of the MY89 (shouldn't be on your 88 BJ74) and later 3B/13BT/15BT, it's part# RADOR56030

We have our own internal access EPC lookup with VIN. There are public facing ones use but I'm not sure how in-depth or accurate they are. For that reason, we've always had this to say on parts inquires.

or on CruiserTeq:

Our behind the scenes parts specialist can then spend time looking up accurate part numbers, they have far more resources (and bandwith) than our phone sales team.

So long and short, I'd need the same information as above to look up the thermostat for your model.
Assuming you have a 1988 BJ74 (based on your signature line) which I've been basing all my feedback on, the correct thermostat is RAD03103 which you have, and that is confirmed used with a gasket RADH56021 for MY88 3B/13BT's. Same thermostat is used with the RADOR56030 on the later model engines with the different housings combo for many applications.

Sounds like you're sorted and will be good @cruiserpilot

Always grateful to all the vendors such as Kurt @cruiseroutfit who continue to support our choice in vehicles. It's not always easy, with the myriad of subtleties that appear when dealing with individual country, regional and world market differences (and many times being the same) with parts, numbering systems and change up part numbers. Then add in NLA parts and sourcing as best as possible OEM quality replacements.
