Does anyone know the part number or where to source the rubber o-ring that goes around the thermostat on a 13bt? Toyota does not list one in their system and you do not get a new one with a new thermostat. Without the o-ring the thermostat does not seat properly in the housing allowing coolant to get past.

This is the ring that was on the original thermostat when I replaced it a couple years ago. I transferred it over to the new one thinking that it was required. So no one else has this rubber o-ring??

I tried the dealer, they don't list one. If I put the thermostat in its seat it just shuffles around, not seating or sealing at all. Maybe the lower housing on the 13bt is different than the 3B?

I recently replaced the thermostat on my 89 3B-2. I used a thermostat for a BJ70. It fit fine, but the thermostat does have room to move up as if there should be an o-ring on it.

The thermo housing looks the same between the BJ75 and the BJ70. I just put it together as is and its working fine. I wouldnt worry about it.

Canuck,if you could give me a few measurements on the thermostat I will see if there is a listing in the aftermarket parts books for the 0-ring,on the thermostat itself if you could measure the OD of the large flange,OD of the small lower flange and also the distance between the two,if possible on the housing the approximate size of the o-ring bore also. The books list several different sizes for the o-rings.
I just need the OD of the large flange for the o-ring but can see if they have a listing for the thermostat itself, reason for all the other measurements..
I don't recommend installing it without the o-ring,coolant will bypass the thermostat.

There is no o-ring. I do not ever recall seeing one, and EPC does not list one for the 3B or 13BT. Just put the stat in, place the gasket overtop, and put the top back on.

Greg ,I recall the thermostat is differnet between the 3B and the 13Bt,the 13Bt has a lower bypass valve along with the main top valve, the o-ring takes the place of the gasket on the housing.

Terms - seems EPC uses the term Gasket, Water Outlet...or Gasket, Thermostat...does not matter if flat gasket or o-ring.

Ok, made some calls. One trusted source recalls having been phoned and contacted about this. Seems "some" 13BT's did have an o-ring, not the gasket. EPC is not a visual help as it does not reference an o-ring in the pictures...unless someone has a 16341-56030 laying around (post 1988 13BT Gasket, thermostat) and check to see if the "gasket" for post 1988 13BT's is indeed an o-ring style.

Said source also confirmed the thermostat is the same between the 3B and 13BT, ala EPC parts numbers matching for the two apps.

It is simply if it is an o-ring gasket or or flat style gasket style housing. The lip could be slightly deeper on the housing requiring the o-ring (have to compare a few and see). Now, where to get a new o-ring. Get your measurements and check with Jimmy as mentioned above and/or take your old one into a Toy dealer and see if there is one on the shelf for a NA application that has the same dimensions.

The question of the day is when the change up happened. Looks like it might be 1988-08 which is when the blue block came in.

1st pic is the 3B and second is the 13BT (7* series).

Canuck, when you put the t-stat in the housing, is the top of the lip flush with the housing. Will there be a gap if you use the flat gasket?

Here is a pic I took, sorry for the crap quality I had to use my cell phone.

Without the rubber o-ring the thermostat sits recessed in the housing and the flat gasket (16341 in the pics Greg posted) would do nothing.

Sorry Greg looks like my fault for mixing up the thermostats, looking at the parts book diagram they both use the same one,but I could have sworn my friends 87 BJ70 had a different one, maybe he is getting the wrong one. I also had a 89 BJ74 and it had the o-ring,no gasket so maybe late 88 on the 13BT was the change.
Canuck the OD of the thermostat looks to be 73mm,and unfortunatly they do not list a o-ring for that size, closest is a 71.2 OD o-ring.Not sure if this would work to get buy until the correct one is found,I am going to the dealer this morning and will check with the parts guy and a mechanic I know if they might have a correct one.

Posting as an update to this thread. I was able to get the appropriate o-ring from Greg at G&S Cruiser Parts. They ordered them in from Japan. It appears that 1989 is the change up year where Toyota went from not using an o-ring to using one.

Another bump for this one, just learnt this the hard way when fitting a new lower thermostat housing.

Found this detail from an australian parts vendor (tojo 4wd centre).
