Of course I could get a cheapo aluminium one from China for a third of that price, but a lot of the big trips I do are to outback SA, so I’d rather go with a copper brass one

Interested to know if quality 4-row cores are available in Australia.

From the pictures, what you have does not look original to me, in which case re-coring is probably of little or no advantage.

Gonna get some quotes for getting it re-cored, or I’ll just get a replacement. The OEM rad is long OOP, what’s the best aftermarket copper brass one available in Australia? I’ve seen the Jayrad one around (and I think that’s what this one is?)

While the rad is out I’m planning on doing thermostat, water pump, new gaskets, hoses, clamps, belts, and replacing any rusted hardware. Also trying the split fan shroud mod.

Any other ‘while you’re there’ jobs I should do while I’ve got the front end apart?

The only game in town in Australia for the HJ60/HJ61 radiator is Adrad.. and yeah, around $950. (I think Jayrad and Adrad are the same product)

Consider a new Aisin viscous hub as well whilst you're throwing money at this.. You'll never regret the two part shroud mod as well!

That’s the plan! The fan clutch is pretty easy to replace later on if I need to, but better to do it all while I’ve got it off.

Is the simplest way to do the shroud mod just to cut across through the middle of the central mounting hole? If I do that, do I need to add any extra supports, or should that stay on pretty securely?

I cut below the top most bolt, its stable like this.. but if you want to make it even more stable you can add some additional small bolts in the top corners. I currently dont have anything but the single top factory bolt, and a larger than normal washer fitted.

(the below photos is actually two parts of two different shrouds.. long story)..

Looking good, no sludge built up in the head.. and that rust is nothing to worry about at all. I wouldnt hesitate to reuse bolts.

I did a service on mine yesterday, for a forty year old engine it runs like a swiss watch. You will be happy you put the time and money into yours.
Was talking to a friend recently who has a newer car, discussing new vs old engines. He was amazed that his car got twice the horsepower despite having half the displacement

Somehow I doubt it’ll still be running perfectly in 20 years. The simplicity and reliability of these old Toyota diesels is really something else

Most things that need to come off are now off

Water pump housing is looking a bit corroded, and there’s a fair amount of rust on the vanes of the pump itself. I’ve ordered a new one, but may try to clean up this one to have as a spare

Tomorrow’s job, if the rain holds off, is to finally get the turbo off so I can work out why it’s leaking oil.

Fan is in pretty good condition, but I want to clean it up before I re-install. Have tried degreaser and brake cleaner to no avail. Any tips?
