After driving my new (to me) car for a month, the 100's GROM + tiny low-res screen is even more frustrating. I. Am. Ready.

I've used nothing but auto in my LX for the past few years! Set it at 68 and forget it. It blasts to get to the right temp and then transitions to whisper quiet, all on its own.
I want to circle back….after reading this and having rear line rupture, I’ve been constantly checking my A/C is working correctly.

My preferred temp is 72 but…yeah I haven’t changed the setting but for a few morning defrosts. I even caught myself telling my wife to stop changing it off auto and just turn it up a degree or two if she’s cold.

Apologies, I was wrong and auto is in fact a great setting.
 
First PCB bring-up is underway, and it could not have started much better. All boards passed visual inspection and unpowered electrical checks with no issues found.

Powered up first board under current limiting:
  • No smoke
  • No abnormal heat
  • 5V and 3.3V rails checked good
  • MCU booted
  • Display came online
  • Encoders and buttons responded correctly
  • Reset and power-disturbance checks passed
  • MPX traffic was received using the A/C control assembly simulator
The screenshots below are from the first live bring-up of the actual prototype PCB.

There is still more testing to complete before we call the hardware fully validated, including the remaining bring-up procedure and in-vehicle testing. But so far, there have been no hardware rework items and no PCB respin identified.

Months of reverse engineering, simulator work, firmware development, schematic design, PCB layout, sourcing, and assembly finally turned into a working physical unit today.

Outstanding news! That display looks like it'll be right at home in a 100. How's dimming controlled? Does it get the signal from the dimmer control for the rest of the dash lights?

Very interested in this as well. I love turning off my nav screen at night for as low light as I can get.

Another solid milestone.

One of the production-intent PCBs has now completed the full design-check testing and passed. The other assembled boards are also functioning correctly and are going through final system-level checks.

At this point the PCB design itself looks solid. Power, MCU, display, encoders, buttons, reset behavior, and the other major board functions are all working as intended.

The dimmer circuit is already built into the board, but the actual rheostat signal depends on other vehicle modules being present, so there is no point trying to perfectly recreate that on the bench.

We are officially at the point where the bench has told us just about everything it can.

Next stop: the truck.



Since we're getting close enough that people are asking, I'll address pricing.

I'm currently targeting approximately $1,099 for the complete kit.

That is not a final locked price yet.

The goal is still a complete plug-and-play system: controller, display, physical HVAC controls, and the vehicle-specific harness.

I'm not taking deposits or preorders yet.

But if roughly $1,099 changes whether you're interested, I'd rather know that now than after production is already underway.
Considering Grom starts at $559, I think your price is very fair.

For a plug and play solution to nav removal I'm 100% on board. Ready to put down a deposit when you are.

I cannot wait to remove that nav screen and go back to a double din radio of yesteryear.
 
It's a big price, but I feel that is absolutely worth it to keep these vehicles on the road.

Having just done a 5000 mile trip in mine, I can't wait to get rid of the Grom. It's so buggy and inconsistent.
I was thinking right around the $1,000 mark, so all good there.
How "plug and play" will this be? Any wire splicing, connector buying, or hardware modification we'll need to do on install? Or is it too early to answer those questions.
 
Will this leave us with a double din HU slot, do we need to source trim pieces?

Well, it’s pricey alright… but quality usually is.

Think we’ve all got a good idea of the work put into it so was expecting it to be about that.

Will still be ordering one, though will need to wait before I order the 2nd one.
