I'm still on a look for an 80, but there are some earlier higher mileage 100s popping up in the similar price range. How many miles is too many with 100s? I know they run for 300k, but is buying on with 250k and up for a "side piece" rig a bad idea for a 100. For some weird reason I feel more comfortable with an 80 with higher miles, but maybe that is because I owned a lemon 2006.
 
Y'all be on the look out for a decent 100. Josh Shearer (used to own Lou's 450) is looking for one.
 
Here are my thoughts on 100.

98/99 for the win. Simplicity for the win. You can put in any radio you want and make sure it has rear air and if you want to get off pavement rear locker.

03 or newer if you want the updated interior but drawbacks. Most have Navi and just putting band aids to make it work with modern cell phones and music options. No rear locker but ATRAC.

I like the LX and AHC.

Our 99 with 185k miles feels as tight like the 03 with 59k miles. I don't see any issues driving these trucks for 500k. You get out what you put in. Like a house take care of it and it will do the same in return.

They are $60k+ new in 90s and 00s. They take $$$ to maintain but worth every bit of it.
 
I agree with Bomar. I like the simplicity of 80s and I guess the early 100s. All the electronics added are just set up to fail at some point even with a Toyota.

My main worry of a high mileage rig is what the previous person did or did not do. My 06 wasn't that high mileage but was evidentally beat on my a NO soccer mom.
 
I have over 220k miles on my '99 and the motor, tranny, and AC are working great.
I do a complete tranny fluid swap every 3yrs/60k miles.
With cars on the road today, you are lucky to have any of these 3 items work after 200k miles.
Steering rack is shot and various bushings need replaced (pulling in to 49 cruiser next week).
But that's the only downside I have found above 200k miles.

Brakes, AC, V8, cabin comforts, are all superior to the 80.
80 wins hands down on the 4+ trails. 100 wins everywhere else.

Running out of ideas and patience on this tie rod end. Other one popped right out.

Any ideas welcome. I am tired of this LX on jack stands. All wheels are on ready to go but this bastard.

Just turned 306k on my 100. Runs great, and it does everything like it should have when it was 30,000 miles old. Like the others before me have said: a 100 is better than an 80 in virtually all respects. (And I still have an 80, love it, and don't plan on selling it.....)
