Removed my original starter as it would grind on occasion. Installed a Factory Toyota GR unit and wow - what a difference. I'm amazed that a smaller, lighter unit can be that much more powerful. It turns over uber-fast now. I would highly recommend this upgrade to anyone.

Hey, I just ordered a regular one from NAPA this afternoon and forgot about these  .
What is trhe application for the GR starter?
it will fit a 75 2F, right?
PMK

App is any FJ60.

Toyota has replaced all earlier starters with this one.

Definatly a good upgrade...

How much was this starter?

Pat, I'm running a FJ60 starter in my '75. I bought a rebuilt from Stevens Creek Toyota (25% for TLCA member) but when opened the box I got a brand new starter instead.

I believe they list just under $200. I'm sure CDan can provide a much better deal.
I went to my local alternator/starter repair shop and they order a rebuilt one for under $90 plus a core (definitely non-working) which I pickup for cheap. I asked MAF what company they got their rebuilds from ($125) and it was the same name that was on the box mine was delivered in. This was a unit that fit 2F motors E to 8/92 and was the non-Bosch made in Japan version.

I bought a used one from Cruiserparts.net for $50.00. That was over a year ago,and still works great.

Ok, I got the gear reduction starter from NAPA, 89.99 + 22.22 core.
It has two hook ups, obviously one for the battery and the other for "start"
My problem is my 75 FJ40 has the battery connection, a slip on spade conection (black/white), and another conector.
This one goes to a stud on the solenoid. The wire is black/red, but goes imediatly to a plug and changes to Black/white. This black/white wire is smaller diameter than the other one.
Where do I connect this?

You don't; wrap the terminal with tape and tuck it out of sight. If you want an explanation you need to refer to the wiring diagram. It is not needed or used on the gear reduction starters.

If I recall correctly, the other wire from the solenoid is a ballast resistor bypass lead. When the key is in the start position, this lead will send a full 12 volts to the coil instead of the seven to nine it sees in the run position going through the ballast resistor.

thanks :bounce: i will bookmark this for the next time I need a new starter

I would find a cheap used one somewhere and put that in now...

really it makes such a difference it is not something worth waiting to do.

got mine for free.99 from greenfox last week! the gear reduction kicks ass. and I got a brand new regular starter I used only for a few months which will work for a spare for now.
