On the NAPA part number question.

1987 Land Cruiser I assume thats an Fj60 with a 2F?

Parts guys are not the smartest and seem to need every detail to put in their computer to get an answer. When I do this, I just want to make sure I get the correct part.

Is there any shimming involved in this swap to get the teeth to line up correctly?

I haven't done this on a 2F before soooooooooooo be patient:D

The only stupid ? is the one not asked:o

every landcruiser from a few years before 82 through 87 ALL had the correct starter regardless of options.

No shimming.

The only thing that may be slightly different is the wiring. And the fact that there is no provision for the ballast resistor bypass. (not a factor for your '80 model)

Anyone have a napa p/n by chance for these?

I just did this upgrade a few months ago when my original starter died. I got Napa part number 44-6154 which is the lifetime warranty one.

I actaully think its 82 thru at least 92 that works, might be thru 97, but to be safe 82-7 is good ;)

can swap even to the early F motors, I have one on my 64 FJ45LV.....took just a few mins to change the wiring around to make it work

John,
Awesome. Did you notice a big difference?

I really have not noticed much of a difference except that the new starter sounds different because it is gear reduction. Where I expect it to shine is in the rocks when I need to start it in gear from time to time.

Hey guys,
I'm a bit confused about the wiring situation with the GR unit.
I have a 68 fj40 with a 77 wiring loom.
I think the main battery wire connects via the thread and nut on the side but which connector does the starter switch connect into, the connection that is straight onto the motor or the connector that is on the end of the thin wire??
Thnks for any advise you could give me .
Shorty

to be honest i forget what or how I had to change it, but it must have been easy as I know it only took me 10 mins to swap out the big green starter in the 64 to the GR

pic if it help

There's a blade terminal that accepts the wire from the ignition switch.

OK. So I put a new re-man GR starter from NAPA in my project 40. When I turn the key I can hear the solenoid click, but the starter doesn't crank. I can crank the engine over with the hand crank (yes, hand crank). I'm using a battery charger on my Optima Red Top in the "start" position. What the heck is my problem?

Bad starter? You can jump it to test it.

YOu know, I pulled it and bench tested it tonight. The starter spins on the bench. But not when I put it in. I wonder of the starter gear isn't matching up with my 3-speed flywheel?

I like how easy the GR starter starts the truck.
But I liked the way the old starter sounded better...

Time to update this thread! :hillbilly:

Napa 446154 Gear Reduction starter mentioned above for a 1983-92 Land Cruiser is now
$124 with a $27.50 core charge for a final price of $96.50. This is the premium starter.

They also have a Bosch unit SR128X for $114 with a $44.14 core charge for a total of $69.86...

The starter listed for a 1971 F engine, 1976 2F engine, or a 1980 2F engine was the same
Raybestes # 444773 $109 with a $27.50 core

I'm sure that most counter persons would not know the difference. Especially if you made the exchange on different days and did not mention it. Though one could not condone such a practice
