best power steering box choices?

we have fj60 p/s on the 55 and it works great. Iron pig off road sells the stuff you'll need for the conversion. Good luck.

That entire center link thing really is unnecessary bull****, so If you are going to add PS, stray from the mini truck setup. (unless it is not an offroad vehicle, but then you don't need power steering anyways).

FJ60 boxes are the cleanest I've seen and keep it toyoter.

A stray from topic, how come I don't see IFS boxes on cruisers?

The only problem with 60 boxes is that they are gettig expensive. I would like to see someone start to experiment with an 80 box since they seem more easily available.

Ryan.

I think you just volunteered your pig for that one, buddy:doh:

I'm using a Scout box, modified for hydro assist, by PSC. Larger sector shaft than an FJ60 box:

IFS/FJ60/FJ80 are essentially the same with the exception that the IFS box only has three mounting holes...

I run an FJ80 pitman arm on my fj60 box on my 40, it has less drop.

The FJ60 input shaft is 11/16" 36 spline, Borgeson carries u-joints that fit this. It is much cleaner to use a borgeson double d shaft than try and adapt stock pieces off of different trucks.

Unless you want to run multiple u-joints, the motor mount is directly in the way for a typical 40 style (thru the front frame) Saginaw conversion on a 55. That's why you mostly see Scout or 60 boxes mounted outside the frame.

Another vote for either 60 or scout boxes. The regular saginaw boxes involve quite a bit of butchering on a pig frame; the 60/scout boxes are a much cleaner and easy install.

The scout box has more power, but the 60 has better road feel. It's your choice.

Go to my webpage in my signature line and read up on the step by step for putting a Scout box in a pig. Forget the 'saginaw' setup that is generally used in 40s. That setup will not fit in a 55. Genearlly speaking, all the power steering boxes in amercan cars back in the 70s were saginaw type of boxes. They functioned basically the same. The attachment method and bolt holes may have differed, but the internal functionally of the ball bearings and pistons were all the same. The 60 and the scout are the best. A box from a 70s ford van will work also, IIRC. It has the pitman arm that faces forward. Saw it being done once when Danny Warden was still in business.
I have two scout boxes sitting on a shelf in my garage. A result of my awful experience of rebuiding a saginaw type power steering box.

for refernce here is a 60 box i put in my pig a couple years back. its pretty much the same set-up as the scout box, but IMO its even easier cause the box works with the 55 u-joints.

shiner bock?? Will that help? :)

Thanks for the pic. Using existing parts is good for me. I ended up not going to the junk yard yesterday. This saturday though for sure. I have to get my buddies Tur(d)cell out of my driveway.

Besides the 3 bolt mounting, is the IFS box a good choice?

Mr. Fang - good write up! If I find a Scout box I'll use it as a reference. Thanks for sharing (and for the aircompressor mod too).
