I've read Philips HIR are 25% brighter than the now discontinued Toshiba, for what its worth.

I wonder how much Kelvin (color temperature) makes a difference in the performance or the perception of:hhmm:

I'm running the Philips HIR in all of my 'fleet' and it's a noticeable improvement. Highly recommend it, along with the PIN 17 fog light mod.

I was trying to read about pin 17 when the mud went down last night. Is this the one that allows use of Fogs independent of headlight switch position.

Correct. Very easy mod, great results.

Kelvin of the bulb is a huge factor, they can say 100% increase in light output, if they are referring to 12,000K...however it's not usable lumens.

Choosing the right color temp is totally dependent on where you live, weather, and your eyes. Most stick with 4000-4500K, that's the safe zone.

Would you mind posting a good link to this minor mod (pin 17) here?

Very cool and looks easy enough to qualify as a minor mod in my book. Will be great in blizzard driving at night to run parking lights with fogs, eliminating reflection from low beams. Provided the fogs can be run without HIGH beams on.

Very nice on the pin mod. I need to do this as well.

Elijah, have you decided/change on a bulb for the fogs or are you going to stick with the 9011 HIR?

guys, that mod doesn't allow fog light use regardless of headlight switch position. It only allows fogs when brights are on....

I'll stick with the 9011's and keep an eye on them. My understanding of the HIR's is that you get the increased light output at the same wattage. Will the increased light also mean increased heat? I would assume so but I'm no electrical guru. That's what I need to find out.

My order for these still hasn't arrived. It has shipped but the free shipping window with Homedepot.com is 5-9 days. Still anxiously waiting.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere on Mud about somebody who did modify the fogs to be allowed to run regardless of headlight switch position???

Finding info on Philips is difficult, so not sure of these numbers: (correct me if I'm wrong and I'll edit)

3200K. Sylvania 9006 OEM Capped
3200K. Sylvania 9005 OEM

3450K, Philips 9012 & 9011 (HIR)

3750K, Osram 9006NBU
3600K, Osram 9005NBU

4000K, Philips Crystal Vision Ultra 9006 blue/capped
4000K, Philips Crystal Vision Ultra 9005

Note: OSRAM SYLVANIA in its current form was created in January 1993, when OSRAM GmbH acquired the SYLVANIA and precision materials businesses in North America from GTE.

I'm going look around latter, but our we sure this one mod won't work?

I haven't seen anything simple or definitive. it would require some fairly technical mods to get that to happen. maybe some have done it for their lightbar.

Have you tried this mod?

It’s my understanding from what I’ve read; HIR bulbs, were developed by GE. The design reflected infra-red light/energy back on filament. Which increased output at lower wattage, this effectively reduced heat. Today's design is very different looking, I wonder if these newer Philips HIR bulbs' still work well at reducing heat output?

And IR heat gun would be helpful, for a before and after install heat test, IMHO

Not so. It only prevents the fogs from turning off with the brights. If the headlights are on the fogs are enabled via the fog light switch, either high or low beam. If by 'regardless of switch position' you mean parking lights then yes, true.

Is this with High beam on, that would be very bad in fog or blizzard?

Easy! Turn the fog switch off! :)

Any way to make fog independent or with just parking lights, this is what I'd like to see a mod for?

For that you'd need to set up a separate relay. Completely doable, just not the scope of this mod.

yes, that's what I meant. only thing mod changes is that it allows the fogs to stay on with high beams. to answer the earlier question, yes I've done the mod. I love it because it's increased light output at night on dark country roads in Michigan.
