Is that phenolic carb spacer for heat dissipation or for more low end torque or both?

new answers

Well, first off, I haven't really done any of the wrenching, just prep work and painting but after assembly and installation i'll be about $4000 deep, buts with a lot of expensive parts. It can be done for less. The motor unassembled put me back $2000. plus header, carb, cap&rotor, waterpump, fuelpump, 4bbl manifold, air filter, oil filter, motor mounts, plugs, clutch (best to do while out) fan ,wires, new choke cable, carb calibration kit. So IMHO it pays to spend the extra dough to do it right.

The phenolic spacer decision was 3 fold:

With a dualport (dual plane) manifold the primary plane is actually a bit restrictive so the spiral bore helps air fuel mixture.

The angle of the deck of the manifold is such that a manual choked Edelbrock doesn't have enough clearance for the choke unless I had a spacer.

It doesn't conduct heat so it helps the carb stay cooler (as does the header tape)

werd, peace, out

Thanks

Thanks!

Its been a long road but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm just super happy that it's a Dec. 76 and an exact year replacement
in addition to being built on its 30 year anniversary, its way better now
than it ever was out of the factory. very tight. can't wait to hear it and
feel it run!!!

Caution: Pix May Cause Spontaneous "arousal"

Well, Final Steps are almost complete.
Take a look and see what you think, boys.
I'll happily answer any questions about how
incredibly sick this new Dec. 76 2F is.

Beat the hell outta the Valve cover with the Cherry Picker & Chain...

For future referernce, For a pig, the Edelbrock is the only carb that will
clear the brake booster (nothing with external bowls will fit)

The waterpump/clutchfan assembly from CoolCruisers of Texas BARELY
fit with about half an inch from cooling fins to the radiator. New motor
mounts a must to insure minimum engine twist (yaw?)

Used the newer larger fan so I had to cut about .25 off the shroud diameter.

Put a new Sachs clutch, pressureplate, resurfaced flywheel, pilot yada yada while I had it out.

For future reference, Offy Manifolds and MAF headers (FJ55 6into1) have almost exactly
the same depth mounting flange so single gasket (MAF header gasket) will work, just
slightly high temp silicone the intake ports for a good seal for producing vacuum.

The Carb is a 500cfm and I live at 6512 ft above sea level so it got the small jets, the soft
secondary springs, the offroad needles, the little length of small vacuum tubing in the bowl
equalizing channel between the bowls (forgive my ignorance on the actual name of that bit)

Thanks For Lookin'!

And thanks to Tom, my Mechanic for doing all the thoughtful custom stuff that only comes
from the true love of ingenuity and thanks for letting me help in the shop (I did some of the stuff that
I couldn't f&%k up.)

sound coming

Last bits:

Had to have a throttle cable overnighted.
Needs some header bolts.

Then we will pop the cherry on this beast.

Does anyone know if I can post an mpeg?

I can take a mini-movie with the digi-cam
and save it as an mpeg, will imageshack host
those?

All that time with the motor out and you did'nt clean up and paint under the hood ? LOL. Looks good Trapper. We'll have to race when i get mine installed in my 40 :D I went efi as i'm tired of choking out when i get vertical !
Mike

yeah yeah yeah

yeah, since it was in my mechanics garage bay, i didn't really have the luxury of taking the time to detail the compartment. Time is money. And it didn't sit without a motor, it had the single f in it from a 69 fj40 softtop. we pulled it right before we put in the 2F. As far as the race is concerned, my truck weighs 5500 lbs, how much does yours weigh? I can probably still take you. This motor isn't a church-going daisy petal. Its a tad over stock.   :D

Oh whoops

Oh, hey mike....spaced that was your tag! Hows it going? So, you wanna get started on restoring my pigs body? Just kidding. Man, wait til you hear it! It gets and loses its RPMs so fast! The compression must be around 8.5to1. Tom turned it over for the first time today, without tuning or timing....it kicked right to life (open header welded up tomorrow morning) it sound like a top fuel drag racer! I'll bring it on over from Durango some weekend soon, or if your in town gimme a call. Now you're building a 40? Whats the thread?

That was the exact same thought I had... but the engine is B-E-A-U-tiful. Very nice!

jsut one piece at a time...

that s***'ll buff out man.

I'm building this thing piece by expensive piece
but the very last step is going to be taking the
body off and getting the interior and glass out,
getting it on a rotesserie, media blasting the body,
and painting it, so it will be dealt with then.

Ah, so there is a method to your madness. Gotcha. ;)

I didn't mean to detract from that awesome engine. So where's the video? Let's hear this thing running! :D

Oh, I know, man

No offense intended or percieved.

Working on it, gonna get the new exhaust first. (video question)

HEY LIFERS:

You all know whats in this motor from this thread,
Where should I set the timing?

Stock is 6 or 7 degrees advanced...
Tom and I were thinking 9 degrees advanced

Sound about right?
