Last week I had an issue that felt like a cylinder failure of sorts followed by coolant coming out the exhaust. I did a little autopsy yesterday morning and this evening, by pulling the motor and having a look see.

The pictures show below...head gasket failure in Cylinder #1 and possibly #2. The #1 combustion chamber in the head is pitted pretty well. This may have been a small issue that worsened over time.

I'll take the head apart further and get it to the machinist. The short block will be next. If all is well, I might just rebuild and run this some more. Damn...i was looking for a good excuse to get a vortec. :p

You were wrong, Mike. You had two cylinders fail.:hillbilly:

Having the 2f out is a pretty good excuse. I honestly think taking out the 2f was harder for me than installing the 5.7 and 4l60e. I'm just kicking myself now for not rebuilding the leaky tcase when I had it all apart 2 years ago. Those motors go in so nice and easy in a 60. Shoot even the 454 goes in nice. My buddy and I just dropped his 454 60 off at the exhaust shop today for the finishing touches. If I did it again i'd skip right to an ls1 with how cheap they go these days. I liked the tbi for simplicity and reliability but 350hp 400lbs of torque would be killer while getting close to 20mpg on the highway. Even the tbi in my soa 60 on 35s gets me 17 if I keep it around 70 and 15 if its 80+. my 2f was about 10 at 65 before.

Didn't I give you a 2f? Was this the one you picked up at my house? I remember you said you had a bunch of motors or something weird like that.

lol...yep...I came and got the 2f from your truck. I am lol-ing beause of the "something weird like that" line. Doesn't everyone have 4 garages worth of toyota junk? That's not weird, is it? :) It had a cracked block from the collision, if I recall.

How is your 454 project going? Is all well?

The motor I am working on now came out of my truck.

Just glad I didn't give you a motor that screwed you. Yeah the mount on the block was broken.

454 is pretty much done. I just got exhaust done the other day. There's little stuff still but nothing major.

Block and parts back from Machine shop

I finally got to go and pick up my re-worked 2f for my 60.

I am now .020" over and the head and block have been shaved. New everything going in this one. In addition to the head drama, I also found the #3 piston was melted a bit after I pulled the short block apart.

The crank is polished, rods worked, new camshaft, lifters, pistons rings, bearings, valves, springs.

The rotating assembly is balanced with the flywheel and crank pulley. It should run smooth.

I'll post some more pictures as I put it together.

any axles you could donate to my truck

What did you break now?

you know I broke the short side birf in Moab - I have been told "we" are not rebuilding anything unless later model 40 or 60 parts are involved

I don't see the 3FE head?:confused::hillbilly:

I know...is just a 2fer...the AZ based 3f stuff I found was a little pricey. Maybe the next one???

I actually had an axle earmarked for your 40, but the whole truck sold. :( I'll keep my eye out. Presently, I don't have any spare "complete" axles.

Nope, didn't know that, must've been buried in a thread somewhere or my memory failed me again. Must be a catastrophic break- seems like a birf would be simple enough to replace.
