progress update

So, wheeling next weekend?

Maybe next next weekend? :p

I finished mounting and plumbing all the accessories with the exception of heater source and return lines. Put on new belts, and new Toyota PCV and grommet.
Oh yeah, new spark plugs, dizzy and wires (thanks Steve)

Not too much more todo....my battery tray is nasty and soaking. I took the time to clean and paint all of the little bracketry and fan shroud during the evenings this week. Also did some wire repair. The HEI wiring / relay need some cleanup. I'm using what is there for now, but have my eye on some nice sealed relays.

Maybe I'll start it up today? Maybe tomorrow. :D

Been watching this. Looking good Mike!
Good to see someone spend the extra dime on a Lucas product as well.

thanks!

Nice looking fan clutch, doesn't even appear to be spewing fluid!:hillbilly:

A front drive shaft maybe helpful?:o

Looking good!

Thanks for the nice fan clutch set up! Yeah...front drive shaft needs go go on there. :)

Got every thing in and plumbed today. (rear and front heater delete). Bumped the key to see if I got lucky with the battery that was sitting next to the truck all summer. I did get one early ignition event on ether in first couple cranks. Fuel pump primed and gas in carby now. But voltage is 11.7 at battery not cranking. :(. That ain't enough to get the hei to even give me a flash of the timing gun.

Looks great Mike, keep up the picture taking.

Will do! I will take some more tomorrow. I'll get some close ups of the heater pipes. I went about with my plan on rear heater delete. When I pulled out the pipe for the front heater it was 50% clogged with rusty muddy goop. That dirty azz hole ain't getting anywhere near my nice clean water jackets. Cabin heat will have to wait till I feel like tearing the dash apart. Until then, the head has a nice plug and the return line is capped.

Thanks, dood. The flat tappet / solid lifters need some zinc and other shiz that is removed from engine oils nowadays. Bob the oil guy will tell you more than you care to know. I just grab the good s*** and put it in. :) I'll have to get down there with this rig again sometime this winter!

some pics from yesterday

Here are the pics I of the clogged up heater lines. Also, the plug I use in the head.

She's alive

Yay! She's running !

I swapped in a fresh battery this morning and still wasn't getting spark out of the dizzy. So I went further down the line and pulled the dissy. I put it on my super special dizzy checker. Build your own with a 12 volt battery and some wire and a metal table. I clamped the performance dizzy in the vice and got no spark while rotating the shaft.

I swapped over to the old HEI that was in there and it sparked good. I kept the new plugs and wires. I'll test out the other HEI and see what is fried in it. I noticed it did get warm when I grabbed it.

I re-stabbed the old dizzy after pulling the valve cover and getting on #1 TDC compression stroke. Lined up the rotor and put the wires in.

The boy kid turned the key and she fired right up. :D

I ran it for 20 mins at 2500 rpm to break in the cam. Temps remained good. Oil pressure good. Paint baked a little. All the coolant that was parked in the exhaust tube boiled out (from when the engine blew 3 months ago). This motor runs so smooth. I'm stoked

Still have to reset the valves since they were set cold a little open. Also gotta jack up the front and put the power steering fluid in. Kevin wants me to put a front drive shaft on, so I'll probably do that too. I'll dumb the distilled water out and replace with coolant. I used distilled water in case there was a massive coolant leak someplace. Also will dump the oil after some break in miles.

Did you read the instructions that came with that DUI ? It had a couple of wires to plug in and you bypass the old ignition assembly under the hood. It takes straight 12 volt power.

hei

Yepper...no worries, Steve. The truck had an HEI unit on it. The 1 wire 12 V and Tach are all that goes to it. My truck was already set up with a switched power relay with dissy power right off the battery.

I will test The magnetic pick up coil, the module and the coil and let you know what is fubar.

:)

Looks like the module in the HEI was the culprit, Saddletramp. I ohm'd out the primary and secondary coil and the magnetic pickup coil and all is good. The module portion was what was warm when I had voltage applied.

I followed these instructions:

Technical Information

I'll probably order up a new module and swap dissy's at some point. Or run the new one in the 69. :)

Just drain a bit, dump in a gal of coolant, good to go.

All's good in first 50 miles

Been doing some break in miles and all is good. I had a new down pipe made and added a bung for an air fuel meter. I plugged it in today and have rich numbers. That is OK by me for now. I'd rather have that than lean. The unit I bought is also a data logger. I have to get an SD card and hook up the tach line in order to get data to correlate to RPM.

I'm going to drive get some higher load figures as well.

more pics

You can see the cap on the bung for now in the above picture. Below is a picture with the wide band O2 sensor installed. The fender is nice and tidy too. Also, not venting exhaust into the motor comartment!!! :)

cruise run

Here is a plot from the run down the freeway...needle bounces between 14.4 and 14.7 in 4th gear running 3500 rpms. That is perfect. :)
