OMG, you've started another one??? check out the Mudbay items, a guy is selling a Harbor Freight sandblast kit like yours. we need to get our own sandblast & powdercoating biz together. that & drink beer while playing with powertools would be fun!

Well what a disappointing day.
Started off pretty good and went well until:

2007-10-08 005.jpg

The PO had mentioned that the windshield wipers did not work and I kinda shrugged it off. I never even noticed the truck was sans a windshield wiper switch! (Anybody have one for a 1972 40?) Well, I examined the wiring and found the mess above. One of the wiper motor wire was fried and I think it was fried by the now missing washer bottle. Fxxxing auto manufacturers need to come up with a better system then wrapping everything like they do. Would make our jobs in the world as "enthusiasts" a little easier when dealing with a 40 year old car!

I started unwrapping the wiring to find how bad the damage was and discovered it was isolated to the wiper circuit. (Now to find some light blue wire - most of you would say this was going a bit far but afterall, I am of German decent and everything has to be just so or I will have trouble sleeping!) Unwrapping the wiring was as bad as it could have been as I did not want to remove the stuff since I have no bettery to tell me how I am doing (one the list for purchase this week is a small trickle charger that I can enrgize the fxxxer with.)

Anywho, I did the best I could with the day. I got the newly powder coated vent cover on thanks to Sean and another Mudder who supplied the gasket gratis.

Also got the newly rebuilt heater in. Nice. It is the thing to the right of the horrible wiring mess. Thanks again, Sean - best part of the truck!

More wire to nowhere:

And some progress in the engine compartment:

Got the dizzy I got from Barry A installed and wired (I am hoping not 180 out). I put the new plugs and wires in too. I have the Pertronix in the dizzy - Roger knows:D - and hope the ohms will work out with that Accel Super Coil. I am too tired to think anymore about it really. If not I will just order up a Pertronix Fire coil. I also have a stock coil Barry sent me so if I have trouble I could use that for a bit too probably.

So that is it for the three day weekend. Thought I was close but the wiring kinda set me back.

We should have gotten together this weekedn...Why don't you and the wife come down coming Saturday for the Rome Chili Cook Off. Was fun last year.

man, sounds like a "butt-blast" but we have to be at a wedding :frown:

your bezel is done but still working on the gusset brackets.
just for the record, the powder supplier is TCI and the color is "Crystal White" #9910-9035.

:bounce2:SAWEET!!!:bounce2:
You going tell me what I owe you?

hhmmm, let me see!

j/k... let me get the gussets and plate done and i'll figure it out. the white bezel will be a little more because it was only one part and had to be changed over so quick (no more than 20 bones or so). when we do colors like gloss black, usually there are other orders in the plant requesting that also and they can take care of more than one order.

IT TURNED OVER BITCHES!!!

A quick update from Saturday's work.

Thanks to Degnol I got a doner wiring harness and was able to repair a bunch of the burned up wiring and it has turned out pretty good. You thought what was under the dash was fawked check this out:

10-20-07 001.jpg

Anyways, I bought a really nice battery charger and charged the old beat battery during the week and for s***s and grins went ahead and turned the key to see what would hapen. Holy Moly!!! It turned over! I was elated. The headlights, tail lights and turn signalls all work as well. Dash lights too. I have to finish sorting out the windshield wipers and ensure the motor is not screwed I should be near!

Sweet charger. All auto pretty much:

10-20-07 005.jpg

I discovered that my fuse block has six fuses, where 1971's had five and 1972's had eight. The only thing that had six was the 55 that I can find. I must have one of those odd months where Toyota was unsure what they wanted to do. That has made repairing some of the wiring a bit more of a challenge.

The PO did me a favor and cut a big ass radio hole in the dash and drilled holes for useless switches and whatever else so I did get those welded up sio I could drill a new one for the wiper switch Ed also sent with the wiring harness. In doing so I set the dash pad on fire but no big deal, it was already trashed and I like fire!!!:

10-20-07 002.jpg

So today I hope to get the rest of the fluids in and work out the wiper issue. If I can do that I might be able to try to actually start it. I am unsure that the ohms of the coil I have will suport the Petronix but if not I will just order up a Flamethrower and look forward to next Saturday when :princess: has class again.

s*** - just realized I forgot to pull the shift rod and measure it to get one machined. Damn. (I have a buddy whose father works at a machine shop and was going to make a larger rod end for me so I did not have to pull the tranny to replace the shift arm and he was going to do it this week.) It is dinner time so I guess it will have to wait.

Well, it has a bit of a heart beat anyways:

10-21-07 001.jpg

One thing I discovered and am not happy about is the fuse I discovered in line with the emergency switch hiding back behind trhe wire bundle in the worst place ever:

10-21-07 003.jpg

I replaced it and it blew after a few blinks which I kinda expected but when I traced the wires everything appeared in place with no bad spots. The left and right turn signals go no problem but that in line fuse keeps blowing when I turn on the emergency lights. The wire even bounces just before it blows! (My bet is on the freaking switch:crybaby:)

I also removed and cleaned the highbeam switch and reinstalled it and it now functions and I have brights. Not a big deal but it was stuck and I figured that could cause a problem (like a fuse bowing in the emergency light circuit - wrong)

I got the wiring in place for the wiper switch and motor and flipped that and got nothing as well so I need to get back at that.

Finally filled all the gear boxes and put coolant in. Discovered a bit of a drip from the water pump too . Not going to wory about it until I get it running and find the time for the saginaw conversion. I will take the radiator back out then for that.

One question though. What are these wires for? Certainly not lights. I have no matching plug in the wire bundle and I see nothing in the various diagrams I have. Anybody have a clue?

10-21-07 002.jpg

So I guess that is it for this weekend. Doesn't look like the truck will be at a meeting this month!

looking good chris! i think those wires go to the flux capacitor.
are those dimming lights for behind the dash/gages?
Turns out they are a speed sensor for an early smog device. So they are nthing that concerns me;p

Tossed that little black and white pigtail and finally got the emergency lights to blink w/o blowing the fuse. Tackled the wipers with no success and did a cursory examination of the heater blower. That may be shot too so I am considering going to dig one out of an Escort as an upgrade.

Anyone know an easy test for the wipers and the blower w/o taking them out. I figure I will just direct wire them to see what happens.

Meh.

Looking good!

I post the procedure that I used but got the heater blower going and established my wiper motor was fried. The procedure for testing the wiper motor is listed in the Max Ellery manual

Weekend Update

Got really close to getting it going today. Verified the dizzy was in right and for s***s and grins ordered a Flame Thrower coil to compliment the pertronix I got from Barry A to be sure my ohms were right.

I had all the tail lites working and then got hit with a gremlin and lost brake lights. No worries. I will get back to them later. I did have an issue with my reverse light. Got it all wires back in and discovered there was no place to plug the switch in. I plugged it in to the wires exposed by the transfer case and Tah-Dah, the 4WD indicator on the dash came on. Not sure where the spot is to plug the wires of the switch into the loom but I will probably end up cutting it near the transfer case and plugging them in there.

Now here is the fun part. I got the gas tank in. As discussed in this thread, there are few solutions for converting your British threads to American or something more practical but I found the solution I liked.
I purchased some parts from Jegs and from www.DiscountHydraulicHose.com to do the trick. Jegs is wierd and I will probably not order from them again. They sent everything one at a time Fed Ex anf I am hoping I do not discover I have paid for each trip. The sent a $369 part FedEx by itself - $12 shipping!!! Not good business sense if you ask me.

Fuel Line 001.jpg

The Fuel line is Pro-Flo200 Series Braided Hose in a 6 foot length for -6 AN fittings part #555-100911.

Then there is the 90 degree Max Flow Swivel Hose End in -6AN part #555-100021 and the very cool Auto-fit Tube Mate to convert 5/16 hard fuel line to -6AN, part #361-360165.

Finally is the all important hydraulic hose fitting to goo from 1/4" BSPP or Whitworth thread to -6 AN. Part 9009-06-04.

This is about where Roger starts laughing at me as the investment was rather large in comparison to other more obvious repair methonds but I always wanted to use some of these cool anodized godamners.

So I did some research on the whole -AN thing and what I learned is that "AN" stands from Aeronautical Standard and is a flare fitting that is just like "JIC" or Join Industry Council offered by the discount hose folks at 37 degrees instead of the standard 45 degree flare that you would use in your basement or kitchen. -AN sizes are based on 16th's measures so -6 AN is 6/16 or 3/8. 5/16 tubing (about the size of the hard line in the 40's)is therefore -5AN. So if you want to do this, -5AN would be right but -AN fittings mostly come in even numbers although some -5AN fittings are available and 5/16 JIC fittings from the Hose Folks. Get it? Good.

So I test fitted the adapter on the tank and was elated that it fit.

Fuel Line 003.jpg

And set about cleaning the outside of the tank a bit. I kicked myself for not bringing it down to the local radiator/gas tank place to have it boiled stripped sealed and painted there since it has been sitting on the garage floor for months but screw it.

While I waited for the shinny tank to dry...

Fuel Line 007.jpg

I started to assemble the first hose end.

Fuel Line 005.jpg

The red end actually screws on to the hose and then the blue piece screws into the red piece making a great strong seal.
