My friend, Diego Weber with his crazy idea of the winch position...

Fairlead up front, fairlead in the back, sounds good to me. Of course I am a bit socially tired right now...

Now that is a damn good idea. Ever get worried about a rock or tree coming into contact with that winch?

BTW, I like the quad shock setup.

please see post below. can't type late at night.

More info on the quad shock setup please. Definitely new to me on wagons.

pretty neat.
i assume it was done for frontal approach angles?

I'm shocked that the mount is stout enough to handle a deep mud extraction.

Looks like solid 1/4 steel with grade 8 capscrews...

I'll def. agree about the weight thing, that's about the lightest winch mount I've seen. I realize that it won't see any side loading, but the shear that those capscrews are seeing is tremendous.

John Foes did that several years ago in the UK with his SWB LR. He ran the cable to the rear first, around a pulley hooked to the rear bumper, and then up to a hook fixed on the front bumper. Pulling the pulley out of the rear let him winch backwards and pulling the hook in front let him winch forwards. Used to be a page on the truck, but my link died years ago.

I'm guessing those SHCS are M10's, so worst case is that they are 8.5mm in diameter (using the M10 x 1.50 tap drill size as an approximation for the minor thread diameter). Using my H-K Design Guide for ref, it calls out a minimum YTS of 1100 MPa (159,541 psi) so a YSS approximation would be 627 MPa (90,938 psi), which means the shear strength of each bolt is 3628 kg (7998 lbs.) What is the winch rated to pull?

Bump for any updates, and to pick your brain, FJ40Peru. In your pics, there doesn't appear to be much if any body lift, right? I see Diego mounted far enough left to avoid the d-shaft, which meant the exhaust needed attention.

it will catch plenty mud and dirt under .. are any kind of " protection " for the winch ?

it is the same dirt that it recives at the front bumper...

But this is a race FJ62, so the winch is only at the vehicle when it race at the rain forest... 1 time by year.
