I run Cooper Discoverer STT on my truck but I've noticed alot of negative comments about Thornbird tyres in posts. Is that because they are but ugly or is there a lack of performance issue. Not many Thornbird tyres getting around down here in Australia (i don't think). I just 'want in' on the joke, if there is one, about this brand of tyre.

I have not tried them myself, but a few of my friends here in Chile that have ran them have complained that they clog easily in mud, they're rigid even at very low pressure, are too loud on the asphalt and not as aggressive as they look at first sight. IMO, They look mean and cool!

They're great for cruising the beach in Daytona... but that's about it.
I think the negativity is due to the lack of functionality they have when compared to all the other dedicated mud/off road tires.

Purely for looks.

Just check out my sig line. :D

I ran them for years, because I loved the way they looked, and after buying them I needed to get the miles back out of them.

They are biased ply... so they are hard to balance, don't run like a radial, follow ever curve on the road, and develop flat spots when cold.

They clog up in mud and become useless super easy.

They are LOUD, but show me a swamper that isn't!

They do work well in sand and snow though, and I think they may be the coolest looking tire ever, but they have so many performance drawbacks that they end up leaving you wanting a lot more.

Just my .02

Whats wrong with that? I'm glad they don't run like a radial. I'm thinking of putting a sig line of "Friends don't let friends drive radials!" ;) (just kidding Rezarf, I do like your sig line) After seeing radial swampers in action I will not buy them. My Bias TSLs rock.

But ya, Thornbirds are for Posers and parking lot princesses. Tread blocks are to close together.

Thats my $0.02

Agreed the flex of a BP tire is GREAT... unless it is a Thornbird... even at 8psi I could barely get them to flex much.

I am not knocking Swampers in general, just the Thornturds.

Ya, I know, I was just kidding.

I have heard you can make a Thornchicken work if you attack it with a grooving iron enough.

I could see that working well. Need a couple days though....

I took a set in trade off a used car dealer's truck 33 10.50 15, I don't have much in them so we slapped them on a set of trail wheels, and use them for trail tires on my brother's FJ60 to save the radials as the terrain around here abounds with sharp rocks, they work very well in this role.....and we all get to make fun of him for the Thornchickkins
