I am not sure yet if Rojo will make the run to GSMTR or the 100s. I was planning on the 100 so I could sleep inside and take my frig. I have to admit it is a nice problem to have...

which ever you bring, it'll be good meeting you and most of the other GA 100s

Week 1: Driving Impressions as a DD

Well this was my first full week of driving Rojo to work everyday and dropping 2 kids off at school. I am not sure what my mileage was but my gas gauge only moved a little (nice). The truck drives pretty good , I have some play in the steering which I am guessing might be tie rod ware. The ride is a bit more bumpy when compared to the 100s of course, but my kids love it ! I am still getting used to shifting gears and when to shift / down shift as the auto has made me lazy. I do like the access in the back with the barn doors which makes it easy to toss a few items in the back.

Over all the truck is larger than I had realized. both in height and width which is good as I have plenty of room for kids, dogs and stuff. I was a little concerned about shifting to a two door vs 4 door as a DD, but after going over getting in and out with my kids they seem to rather enjoy the climbing and jumping out.

So I have found a few small items that I need to fix.

1. rear wiper and motor missing - thanks to she's mad I can check this off my list.
2. 2 of the rear seat belt buckles part missing.
3. passenger side mirror has a crack which makes it shake bad.

welcome

Welcome to the 70 series-in-the-US club. Rojo looks like a really nice find.

Are those tires 33" X 9.5" ? I'm trying to stick with the 15" rims on my BJ70 and like the look of the skinny tires, but can't find anything in the 31" range.

I did a lot of looking a while ago and it seems near impossible to find skinnies for 15" rims. Maybe other people have had better luck but if you want skinnies, 16" rims opens up a ton of options. Here in the States.

These are LT235 / 85 / 16 which tire rack has as a 31.7 / 9.4

so I guess more like a 32 but they seem every bit as tall as a 285/75/16. I like the look of the skinny and hope it translates into good gas mileage.

Here are a few close ups of the pre filter.

It has a metal top with wing nut.

It has slotted vents on the bottom to get the air to spin up thru the bowl.

You can see what it looks like after pollen season in the south.

Thought for your consideration ...
Protection for your truck from contact with other vehicles (drivers) in Atlanta traffic. Such as stout front and rear bumpers plus sliders.

Eight years ago, my '85 BJ70 was hit in the drivers door while my daughter was driving. The other car ran a stop light. The damage to the 70 was limited to the door and rocker so it was repairable, but the insurance company freaked and totaled due to its rarity (getting parts and the repairs done).

With my '86 BJ70, I have added protection from other drivers since she is my daily driver. She has been hit twice and only required some touch up paint to the bumpers (the other vehicles required much more). As a side benefit, the '86 has trail armor installed and ready when I have a chance to get off road.

Good luck and welcome. Your truck is very nice.

Truly one of my biggest concerns as of right now some A-hole runs into me..., would be that very thing .. I know at this time I do not have enough coverage (full but not enough replacement value) and will be shopping around to try and get the right stuff. I have read many threads there on the topic and understand what I need, but hope to hell I never need it.

Glad your enjoying the cool beast! 70s a a blast to DD
when my 79 series was of the road for a few weeks get the turbo etc i was using my old mans uzj100 the auto and comfort was cool but very soon got boring and when I finished my 79 series I was more than happy to give the uzj back and jump back into DD my bread box.

Finding a replacement side mirror is not hard. These guys ship to the US.

http://www.euro4x4parts.com/parts/lrt1004-2145_mirror_outer.html

Only 27 euros a piece. 50 euros a piece if you want to switch to chrome mirrors.

Good to meet you at Windrock on Saturday. I have enjoyed your thread.
Peter

Steve,
Missed opportunity for me to meet you because I was at GSMTR too.

Peter,
I did not see you at the dinner or raffle Saturday. I hope the wet trails did not delay you like it did others trying to get to the GSMTR closing ceremonies.
Also, congratulations on your new BJ. Maybe next year I will be able to look it over better.

Good to meet you also , would love to here more about your BJ74 ! I am sure we would all like to see pictures from the trail.

time to baseline Rojo

Well , I could use some suggestions. I am trying to figure out in what order to do these or just go ahead and get them all out of the way.

Oil change
Fuel Filter Change
Belts
hoses
new cross over hose
Diff Oil Change
Front Axle Service - weeping passenger side
Flip anti inversion shackles

wonder if I should replace radiator with new OME (4 row for a BJ74), I think mine might be starting to weep.

I also have a electric fan on the front of my AC condenser is this normal ?

Also there doesnt seem to be many gauges should I bother with after market gauges or wait until I do a turbo in a few years ?

Any other suggestions would be great... Rojo seems to be running fine :steer:

At a minimum I would do all of the fluids and filters so you have a good base line. The others can be done as time permits. Just my 2 cents. Thats what I did to my BJ73 from Spain. Very Dirty trans and t case fluid was in there. Shifts like butter now when cold and hot...

Added my first little mod... garage made mount bolted to driver seat with super Velcro and top strap (not seen in picture).

hopefully I never need it , but maybe I can help someone else who might.

just because....

Also found my first little issue I get to hunt down , I have a little water leak some place which is getting the driver floor mat wet. Should be able to figure out with hose and water test this weekend.
