Yet another fj55 build thread...zzzzz

Got to take some pics and video of the carb from all angles and vacuum line pics too before removal so I can reinstall correctly!:D

Excellent idea, especially the carb linkage. You can rebuild your own carb. A few vendors here can get the correct rebuild kit for you. A gallon of good carb dip. some compressed air is nice. Lots of people on 'Mud have rebuilt them (me too). The FSM has a great section on the carb rebuild. It's not a hard carb to rebuild.
Much easier to install and work out the bugs in a stock setup than opening another can of worms with a Weber.

THat is what I have heard so as soon as I can pull it off I will get it shipped out.

Just a little update, I am still waiting for my carb to be rebuilt by fj40jim. I sent it out 1/12/11. I would really like to get it back so I could get it on the truck and see if it runs better. Nothing new other than that. I do have power to the rear window motor but it won't move or even make noise. So I hope to find the short or replace the motor.

draining fuel tank

I am hoping to have my carb back next week some time. Does anyone have any suggestions to drain the fuel tank? I have a large aftermarket tank that appears to have a thick protective plate held in place by 4 bolts/studs. Do I just pull the lowest fuel line off and jack up the back of the truck to get all the fuel out? Do I run the pump with the feed to the carb off the carb and in a bucket? Do I run multiple fuel filters and run the fuel through the carb (i.e. running the engine)? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well I drained the fuel tank and cleaned out the line, replaced the fuel filter and installed the newly rebuilt carb. I was surprised to have it run exactly the same. Oh well. :o

That would be a bummer! :frown:

How is custome tank vented? Are you building pressure or vacuum?

Ummm... chomp chomp slurp chomp slurp.... mmmm these are delicious. I am eating my words for those of you who are wondering WTF I am talking about.
The truck sat outside today and ran with the choke out 1/2 way for about 20 minutes then I pushed the choke in slowly and it died. I started it up again, pulled the choke out 1/2 way again, let it run again for 10 minutes and pushed in the choke slowly and it died again. Repeat, and let it idle again for 10 minutes or so and pushed the choke in... and... it idled. I revved it up and it didn't die. So I drove it around and it ran fairly well. Then I stopped (applied brakes) and it died. I started it up after pumping it many times and pulled the choke out 1/2 way again, let it run for 10 minutes and then slowly pushed the choke in and it idled again. So, I stand corrected, it does idle without the choke out; it just does so after sitting still on flat ground and running for about 10 minutes. So now I can sell it and the new owner will have a running 55.

I had all those problems dude. Even had my carb built from Jim C. Still would die unless I pushed on the gas, and would almost always die when I slowed down or stopped....read this. It is a long read, but after trying many things, it turned out to be my Intake manifold had a crack in it. Right under the carb. It was only visible when I took the carb completely off...Apparently they are notorious for cracking right under the carb....where the heat riser(?) usually is. the stock exhaust gets too hot and cracks the IM.

Anyway, So it was creating a very bad vacuum leak. I had it welded, put on a new gasket and it runs better than the day I bought it. HTH

I did get it to run better, and the new owner drove it home and said it idled down when he got home. I am sure he will be reading this too, so I will pass on the info to him. Thanks for the link and support.

Yep, to a really great local guy who likely will restore it to its former glory. As I said earlier I am sure he will be on this board and need your help and guidance...:p

I picked up a'92 4runner and am building that. There will be pics of it on some of the other toyota boards.
