Let us know! I have a new headliner here for both the '55 and the '60. I just put in new seals on the '55 a couple of years ago so I do not want to destroy the seals. I think I can get the windows out without destroying them and if the windsheild breaks I have a used unbroken OEM one here.

You do need to use an adhesive and clips around the openings as well as the trim at the "A", "C" and "D" pillars. I don't think there is any trim at the "B" pillar.

I just looked in the shop manual. It doesn't really say. I'd probably for the windshield and then the tailgate and then the in between.

I am probably going to cut the A, C, and D pillar covering short and custom make some trim.

I guess what I'm curious about is whether there is a specific order to do things in.

I would assume step one is hang the headliner from the bows.

From there, no real idea. Do I want to pull the windshield side tight and then do the tailgate section sight then do all the side related stuff?

Or is it pull the windshield side tight, then pull the front door sides tight, then the rear door sides tight, then the cargo windows tight, and finally the tailgate?

There used to be a write up on the old birfield pig list that had a lot of photos. I do not know if it is accessible. I might even have a shot or two saved to another hard drive.

I can not remember who its author was (EVAN I think). I do have in my minds eye the image of all the glass out and a large number of those flat large winged welding type vise grips holding the headliner in place for easy/removable adjustment before placing the clips on. I want to say (perhaps not correctly) that he worked it front to back for the initial setup.

I will look. Maybe someone from the recent reminicence thread can spot this and find a link for tha archive. If, that is, it is on the web.

With all respects and ownership of photos to Evan Jenkins and Birfield here are a couple of sample shots from his thread. Wish I had it all and in larger format.

He must have made a run on the 10 for 1 sale at Sears.

I do have some more of the shots if anyone can not find a working link. But, while i did not request permission to copy them, I would like to have permission of its owner to post them here...if'n anyone knows him or his contact info?

I'm not on pirate. Did you send him a message? It is really too bad Birfield is down. That write up had like maybe 7 pages of photos and comments. In his case he started with a collapsed roof and adding extra bows for support, new insulation panels and the like.

Unfortunately, it looks like he hasn't been on pirate is over a year :( I'm going to send a PM anyways but not holding my breath on it.

Why not send him a PM on here? "fj55-100" is probably the same guy, his name here is also Evan, and he's been on here!

LiL John, I recommend contact cement thats used for cove base, I used this stuff to install that weather strip in my engine bay and this stuff is bullet proof, a local retso shop uses this stuff for everything, fabric , leather, rubber etc. Find a local flooring installation company and asked them what they use.

Does that cemment have a yellow tint? My PO "repaired" a section of headliner in my 55 over the windshield (without removing the windshield/rubber). Whatever it was it is still firmly stuck on.

John,
The original write up focused initially on his collapsed roof. He welded in new "extra" bows for support after reforming the convex shape. I did not save any reference to cemment if it indeed existed. His placement stratagy was pretty straightforward...front to back, snugging as he went along with the bulk of the final staightening coming at the TG. I know there may have been cemment of some sort on the original...ti seems like some of the edging appeard to be "welded on"...but that may have been heat and age. On the 7/70 of mine there were a hell of a lot of those little clips to be removed so that implies that maybe glue was not needed.

Thing with the glue is it better have a VERYslow dry/cure obviously. Unlike the the body WS there is just a factor of adjustment that could kill you with cemment. I know, that goes with out saying

Yes, this stuff is rock solid. This weather strip has a 1/4 inch glue surface and is still holding strong. The bottom of the strip is not flat and it's glued on Speedliner.

I am a do it yourselfer at heart, but my skills are limited and I am not good at finesse stuff like interior, upholstery or paint. I am better with metal and mechanicals. I plan to send the piggy off to get all the seats, interior, headliner and windows with weatherstripping put in by a professional shop. Well, someday anyhow........ :(

Im still kicken around from time to time . Headliner was hard to strech in to where it looked good in all the corners . but i started by hanging the bows then pulled in the windshield ,clamping it as i went ,used a heat gun to pull out the wrinkles , moved from front to back pulling on all the bows in order as i went , tucking it around the pillars , I didnt glue it in place untill i was happy with how it fit , then put back in all the glass . took alot of time . 1 full day . I found where it was folded in the box in half it had a wrinkle down thecenter that took almost a year in the sun to pull out..
I would like to do another some day , i alwayse thought the second one would be easyer .
