Okay here we go... Lots of questions on this desmog. I have the Trollhole carb to install and will rebuild my stock one for a backup.

The EGR goes away I understand that. However the charcoal canister is connected to that. Where will that now connect to?

Also, I have a header - there is a corrugated hose that goes up to the stock carb. Assume I cap that off?

There is a cap with two hoses coming off it - it is located just below the carb - one line goes to the EGR the other went to air pump I removed. Again another cap?

I know there is a search but hopefully people are kind and don't beat me too much for asking questions that are likely already answered.

Thanks!

I will try to answer your desmog questions Mike, but I know some of the desmog is different from my '78 to others' '77 - so, I'm thinking that your '74 may be differ even more...

44 didn't have EGR when I bought it - but, I can tell you my desmog required I keep the evapo stuf, the charcoal canister, the VCV and a BVSV. This is from memory, 'cuz my engine is at the spa.

Your first question - remove the EGR and cap the header's EGR port. Since the headers get so hot, capping this is probably means welding it shut. My headers never had an EGR port.

Your second question - the corrugated tube goes to the EGR Pump or something like that. I never had EGR, so I don't know what it connects to..

Your third question - the 'gas filter' IIRC, cap the port you don't use - or, you will have a vacuum leak.

This Thread has @Fbks_cruiser and @FJ40Jim 's '78 desmog schematic - maybe it will help somewhat.

google ih8mud: '74 desmog - the discussions have advice for '74 - one, I read, said NOT to remove EGR - I dunno...

In your other thread, Pin_head said, "For that year there isn't any difference between smog stuff that doesn't work and removing it. Since there is nothing to be gained, it isn't worth the considerable effort to remove it. Just disconnect the vacuum line at the EGR and plug it. Done."

Okay focusing on the cooling system since it sounds like the carb/desmog is going to be a lot more work. Obviously I'm committed now so will figure it out - thanks to the MUD group for the help as I definitely need it for that.

Made some progress tonight getting some stuff out:

I don't know anything about TrollHole carbs, Mike... But, from everything I've read, Marshall (@Trollhole ) will take care of you.

The link I posted earlier, post 6 says, "passenger side (of carb), rear" for choke cable connection.

Thanks Danny! I see a screw where it should go but it just doesn't make sense to me how the cable is anchored.

If this pic is passenger-side, rear, is it possible you simply connect the cable under what appears to be an attachment point, directly under where your cable crosses that screw?

That is the back side of the carb... So odd. The original had an obvious set screw with a hole where the wire passed through. Not super clear on this one. Doesn't help that it is in a really bad spot to see. Perhaps I need to take off my hood...

While this carb is slightly different (cable vs. mechanical linkage), the cable stop for the choke cable appears in the same location. So now just need to figure out how to secure to the point indicated in green. This should not be that difficult... :bang:

That one I get - it is for the cable housing. But the left circled area. That is where I'm struggling. On mine there is another screw there that threads into a "hat" shaped nut so therefore it bottoms out before anything is tightened down. In the photo above it almost appears the choke cable would have an end on it that fit into the slot vs being secured by a set screw.

Sorry Mike! I didn't notice the green on the left (colorblind) - I see it now, but can't see the detail of what' you circled. When I blow it up on my iPad, it's blurry. Can you get a close up of your left circle?

I finally got it!! Woohoo! Once I took apart the barrel/screw I found the hole in the barrel. Jeeze can't believe I couldn't figure that out.
