Wobbly Harmonic Balancer (main pulley) on 1HDFT

Hey fellas sorry for resurfacing this thread but I was curious as to whether any of you have heard of the crank bending. Maybe after an accident? I've just put a 1hdft in my cruiser and sadly the harmonic balancer is wobbly as all ****. We swapped it out for another one and still wobbling. A little bit of oil leaking from the front main seal to by the looks of it. I haven't checked the key slot as of yet. But just curious to see if it is possible for the crank to bend?

Hey fellas sorry for resurfacing this thread but I was curious as to whether any of you have heard of the crank bending. Maybe after an accident? I've just put a 1hdft in my cruiser and sadly the harmonic balancer is wobbly as all f***. We swapped it out for another one and still wobbling. yeah I've seen this when the engine has been dropped too its possible the crank can bend or maybe you even have some crank walk

Wow. That is awesome.
My oil pump has a primer fill port. And my oil filter still has oil in it. I think my pump should prime fast.

Well the old crank is out and the new one is in. Lifting the block skirt (lower block? Main bearing cap) through the chains I had hold the motor... Was pretty interesting. The crank isn't light either. I reused the bolts for the bearing cap, but used new bolts for the con-rods. Now waiting for my new harmonic balancer and some seals.
While motor is out I'm going to tackle some other small projects:
Install cooler for power steering and ditch the "paperclip".
Rebuild PS pump
Install aftermarket fuel filter (the stock fuel filter is expensive and needs to be ordered. I also don't like the plastic water drain)
Move vacuum canister. (It's big and bulky and wasting space. I think I can sneak it inside the fender. )
G-Turbo? (My rebuilt turbo has a ding in the compressor wheel... Might be a good time to upgrade)

Picts:
So, I set everything to TDC, but still needed my own marks to set it back together.

The main timing gear was a bear to get off. Crank is scored and JB-welded but it finally gave in.

Both keyways scored. Oil pump drive gear keyway also chewed up. The Key was broken in half.

Gratuitous shot of new crank in block

Did you remove the crank without removing the head?

After reading through this thread carefully…….
New crank pulleys (harmonic balancer) crank bolt, washer, front main seal and oil pump O ring are on the way from partsouq. I found a torque wrench that goes all the way to 600 ft/lbs. I just need to find a device to prevent engine rotation.

Reading this I'm afraid to pull my hd-ft apart as I drove 3000km of a 4000km trip with what started out as no charging and the engine warming up after a fill up. Had already laid down a 1000kms.
Unfortunately I was passing through Revelstoke BC and Roger's Pass in winter weather.
Pulled over of course, and with traffic and snow plows going by I put on my coveralls removed a skid plate, and fortunately had a nice big socket and torque wrench.
Locked her in 4L in gear(5speed) and chocked a tire with wood.
The nut had come loose and of course things were wobbly.
Anyway, put my back into the torque wrench and then carried on.
I drove slowly (for me) as I continued to monitor my gauges and feel of the powerplant.
Yes, she did drip oil, but only 1L/1qt per fill up which is normally 6-8 hours.
If I drove 120kmp it would be more like 2L/qt.
I'm hopeful that because I stopped quickly I just might get away easy...

Just purchased Oring, pulley, balancer, two keys and big washer. Would have purchased the bolt but they were out of stop.
$524.71 without bolt.
There are two KEYS in parts manual.
Purchased an extra O-ring in case i screw some up...standard Toyota part.
Parts in photo.

Main job is done!
Just need to put some parts back on.
First attempt was a maybe cheat, but I chickened out tightening up that big bolt just because it didn't feel just right.
Bit the bullet and removed the grille, rad, batteries etc.
Extra work ,but man you can see the key way if sitting down. Little dab of paint stick to help out.
Luckily there was no damage to the crank, and I found the old key while changing the seal. Key was almost OK.
Parts are from the 79 series dealer.
only difference is the original harmonic balancer has 4 bolts vs the newer style having 6
I can't believe she went 3000km to bring me home busted like that.

Nice work. Did you do the front main seal? How did you torque the big bolt?

Yes, changed the seal.
Found the original key, was in pretty decent shape. What saved my crank is that the unit broke at the key. Used locktite on all of the bolts, paint sticked the bolts for easy visual.
Removed the A/C and extra wiring just to make room for easy access to the fundamental parts, as I rarely require A/C
Used my big impact and then my torque wrench, plus red loctite.
Easy to check things with a phone camera once painted up.
Decided to stick with the original Green fan hub clutch.
Yes that is snow! To lazy to pull tires and roof rack.
Note: i keep spare belts, including a timing belt which fits over your water pump and main pulley, you can't drive fast, but with a diesel you can drive for hours if you don't use electrical components.
