Wobbly Harmonic Balancer (main pulley) on 1HDFT

Wow. That is awesome.
My oil pump has a primer fill port. And my oil filter still has oil in it. I think my pump should prime fast.

Well the old crank is out and the new one is in. Lifting the block skirt (lower block? Main bearing cap) through the chains I had hold the motor... Was pretty interesting. The crank isn't light either. I reused the bolts for the bearing cap, but used new bolts for the con-rods. Now waiting for my new harmonic balancer and some seals.
While motor is out I'm going to tackle some other small projects:
Install cooler for power steering and ditch the "paperclip".
Rebuild PS pump
Install aftermarket fuel filter (the stock fuel filter is expensive and needs to be ordered. I also don't like the plastic water drain)
Move vacuum canister. (It's big and bulky and wasting space. I think I can sneak it inside the fender. )
G-Turbo? (My rebuilt turbo has a ding in the compressor wheel... Might be a good time to upgrade)

Picts:
So, I set everything to TDC, but still needed my own marks to set it back together.

The main timing gear was a bear to get off. Crank is scored and JB-welded but it finally gave in.

Both keyways scored. Oil pump drive gear keyway also chewed up. The Key was broken in half.

Nice progress, looks like you'll be back up and running in no time!

still waiting on a couple parts; most importantly a new oil drive gear.

A couple thoughts about smoke. This engine was smokey.

here's a little background: 18 months ago I took off to ride a bike across Spain; i decided that was a good time to have the IP and injectors rebuilt. It wasn't smoky; but the pump was weeping a little but.
Upon reinstalling the pump, I had an issue timing it. Hard to explain (or remember), but one of the gears was a tooth off.
https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/he...-pump-install-timing-gears-bdc-vs-tdc.786933/
anyway, after several tries and having my head in the clouds... I got it running. I drove 50 miles... and ruined the head. Apparently the camshaft timing bolt is important. (sigh)

363 days later... the head was fixed with a rebuilt head from England.

But, now it ran smokey. Much smokier than before I had the pump rebuilt. The power is ok, and the EGT are fine. But it's smokey. And if I turn the fuel down, it's a total dog. I drove it about 6000 miles (baja, Utah, Colorado.) till the current issue.
Black smoke at idle, and off idle, and while boost builds... and pretty much all the time. No oil consumption. So... smoke must be either IP, Injectors, Timing, or Compression.

Compression: The shop that did the head (I was too angry to touch it myself), did a compression test. But neither of us kept the numbers... and I was so excited to get the truck back I don't even remember hearing them.

Timing: I was hoping that the messed up harmonic balancer had somehow mess up my timing when I put the IP in and that is what was causing excessive smoke. Now that the new crank is in, with new harmonic balancer, I temporarily bolted everything together, enough to get the timing belt back on. Guess what... timing is right where it should be.

IP/Injectors: After finding the timing to be correct... I pulled the injectors and pump and send it out to be checked at Diamond Diesel (even though they _just_ rebuilt it 6000 miles ago). The SF Bay Area doesn't have a lot of choices... but Diamond Diesel has done a good job before. They rebuilt my friends 1HDFT's IP. And they rebuild a couple 1HZ IPs for me. It will be interesting to hear their reaction to my pump tuning (I only tuned it a little).

Valves: There's a slight chance it could be valves. I mean, they were set when the head went in... but they should have been readjusted within a couple thousand miles. And... well... who knows. Can't check them till the IP is back.

All six injectors on were toasted.

after only 6k miles! They said it was probably water.
$1000 labor and new nozzles.

I guess that explains the smoke.

Water from where? Bad fuel? Sounds unlikely to me...

yeah. water in the fuel. Called a second injection shop and asked for their opinion; they said water in the fuel can actually explode the tips right off the injectors.

Oh wow... That's a new one

That's one of the buggers for DI such high injection presures are intolerant of contaminants. Makes me think about your injection pumps well being. They run tollerances that, well, are zero tollerance. The fuel lubricates it. When you substitute water, you loose all libricity as water is not a lubricant. Well except for KY jelly, which is water based, but that's for a much different application.

My injector experience parallels yours - rebuilt twice in 2 years. Third time I said phukit and called Akella. New injectors would have been much cheaper and a lot less grief, ah well. Hope you have better luck.

The horror stories just keep mounting for these injectors, there is a guy back east who had nothing but problems also. Thankfully I found Jon locally and have not had a problem

Well... She's alive. Have yet to test drive but I fired her up. I had primed the oil pump view the tiny port in side of timing case. When I was finally ready I disconnected the fuel solenoid wire and cranked till I saw oil pressure come up. Then I bled injectors. Finally I turned the key and she fired right up.

It was a long road to get here. Everything I touched along the way needed a little love. I've had this truck for 50k mile or so. Many Death Valley, southwest, and Baja roads along the way. Lots of dirt, mud, and washboard.
Cleaned up lots of wiring. Cleaned and painted engine compartment. Fixed intercooler tubing (many of the tubing connections had no lip so under high boost they sometimes blew off). Ditched the stock ps cooler in favor of a transmission cooler style. Also found many wires, hoses, lines had chaffed from all the rough roads. In many cases they were on the edge of failing or shorting out. Baja roads are _rough_ on our trucks.

Unnoticeable.
Replumbing the intercooler is on my list. But it works so dang well... Hard to justify the time.
It was worse when I bought the truck but I cleaned up a couple curves.
Way it was explained to me, air pressure moves as a wave. So as the pressure builds at the turbo the pressure builds across the entire inside of the intercooler system nearly immediately.
