Which winch?

Would you run on an FJ60?

Like I said, I've been lucky. I know I won't always be lucky.

On another note, a guy at school (with a sweet 60) is planning an external cage with hitch receivers on each bumper and on each side of the roofrack. His plan is to use a receiver-winch and have 4 different mounting locations for whatever situation he finds himself stuck in.
I thought it was a cool idea.

Sounds like a dumbass idea to me. Exo cage would almost make him sound hardcore, but no hardcore wheeler would depend on a receiver mount to do a real recovery.

course that's just my opinion though :flipoff2: :D

...hitch receivers...on each side of the roofrack
That is a terrible idea. If you have your rig stuck and you start pulling from a point up on the roof rack, you're just gonne tip your rig straight over on it's side before it moves sideways at all... Down on the rocker guards would make more sense, but like Junk said, no hardcore wheeler would depend on a receiver mount to do a real recovery. That's why they invented longer winch cable/rope, tree savers, shackles and snatch blocks...and also why it's better to wheel with more than one vehicle. :D

Thanks for the input so far dudes. Sounds like my money's gonna go for an 8274-50.

What are you going to school for?

God help everyone if it is ME or EE....

The only winch for me is Junk's Momma :P[/glow]

hydraulic sucks dude. would you think that there is a reason why just about everyone has the 8274 unless they can't get it to work with their setup? :flipoff2:
Umm...maybe mile markers suck, but a real hydraulic winch will blow even the 8274 out of the water.

That's why I said "of all the electric winches" ;)
I haven't figured out how to keep all my accessories, smog, AC, PS, etc. and somehow fit another hydraulic pump. The PTO isn't a realistic option either for my FJ60.
You could go with a PTO pump?!? :D

Curious why you think a PTO is realistic for your cruiser?

Lord...

No one with an ounce of intelligence would rip a 'real' hydro, or PTO winch, they work great, so long as you have a pump that will flow enough oil to make them perform, and that you have engine power to turn the pump. Utility companies, railroads, etc., they have large hydro Tulsa(Ramsey) units on their trucks, and have a pump that can create the flow needed to make the winch perform properly. They, like wreckers, were designed to perform work with the proper equipment.

There is not a manufacture that makes a hydraulic winch for this market that would fit in the bumper options for these vehicles, or that honestly, has the quality to be installed on a Land Cruiser. The Milemarker unit is a joke. It is painfully slow, at best. There are hydraulic pumps that are engine driven that could be adapted to the Land Cruiser engine, with a lot of work, to possibly at least get the oil to the winch, but, if the winch is not set up to handle the increased flow and resultant heat, then we will have issues there also. The hydo winch is a great idea, but thinking that a hydro unit can be ran off a power steering pump efficiently, and perform work in a timely manner, is foolish. I have yet to see one not take four to five times as long to do the same job that a quality electric unit could do.

There are instances that I have found myself in that had I owned a hydro or PTO winch, self recovery would have been out of the question, due to rollover, and a non operational power source. Will I be able to winch all day with my electric, and no engine? No. But, with dual batteries, I have been able to operate my winch long enough to get myself righted, and running again, without any cause for worry about a dead batteries.

This nonsense about having an electrical power source to create hydraulic flow as a back up, is foolish too. The electrical power needed to be able to sustain any form of serious winching operations would suck the life from the batteries just as fast, if not faster than using electricity to perform the work directly.

Good luck!

Since no one makes a 'real' hydraulic winch for this market, would this not be comparing apples to oranges?

Here's few that should do nicely. Not specify for our market, but should mount without much trouble.

Get an ARB winch mount bumper, and get it done. Please do a write up on this too so that Brian can add it to the tech pages..and include the costs of all pieces for the average guy to procure with part numbers, and sources.

Thanks!

Not going after anyone.

You can not compare a PTO or hydraulic winch to an electrical unit, apples to apples. Simply becasue they are all winches, does not make them the same. This would be akin to saying that a CJ-7 and an FJ-40 are the same, because of a similar wheel base, tire size or paint color...

The 8274 has proven itself for years. Dollar for dollar, you can not beat that winch, period.

Naw, I think I'll stick with the PTO winch that's sitting the garage waiting to be installed. :D

I still like the idea of a hydraulic winch. Can have the same control as a electric, but more line speed and definitely a lot of pulling power.

Forget the electrics

If you want power go with the OEM PTO

Pull the plug from the Pacific

I'm bogged down in the weird idea of someone thinking that it's reasonable to mount winches on roofracks.

Is it for vehicles with hulls for roofs that float when flipped over on water?

Like the man said: "Whatever floats your boat"..........or so THAT'S why Toyota made the roof out of fiberglass.......

How sustainable is it when your upside down or on your side. I wonder why very few people have hydraulic winches on this forum and most have electric? Could the majority be misinformed on electric?

And I'm sorry you posted a test from a site that is dedicated to Hydraulic winches seems a little bias to me.

Fashion, the power of advertising and peer pressure and the fear of being different. As some one pointed out before electric power packs can deal with those occasions when the engine is cut or you feel like hanging around like a BAT. You can run a hydraulic all day and need not worry about any thing other than fuel in the tank which at tick over will last all day. Electric winches are only meant for short hall occasional use, that’s why so many of them burn out or people have there engines revving away desperately trying to keep some sort of charge in the numerous battery banks. :)
