Thanks for the info, i will look into this more.

For those with the A442F, how much fluid are you using for a simple drain and fill.

The dipstick isnt all that clear, everytime i pull it out the thing is covered

I use Mobil 1 ATF. At 4 quarts per 7,500 miles (my interval), the cost differential vs dino over the course of a year is minimal.

If you haven't seen it, this post has a link to a spreadsheet that calculates how many drain and fills are required to achieve a desired percentage of new fluid.

Tom

My maintenance spreadsheet has a page on it that calculates the average age of the fluid in the system as well.

I had dramatic results with the Redline Synthetic ATF. My old fluid was really cooked. Redline provided smoother shifs and less "clunk" into 2nd gear. After some recent HARD wheeling outings, it still has the same smell, texture and color.

I switched to the Redline after HOURS of reading posts and threads and Cary was the person that was really impressed with the Redline ATF. It definately is not cheap (I found mine for $10/qt).

I followed the directions for the exchange posted on this site and things went really smoothly. I ended up using close to 19 Qts. You must have PATIENCE if you choose to go this route, because you can't just dump in new fluid. You have to add slowly b/c of the narrow neck where the dipstick is:(

I use Chevron which I buy by the case from Costco and I do a 4 qt change every 5000 miles. Works great so far.

Guys, what about the Filter? How often are you changing that, and is it necessary before doing an ATF TRANSFER?
Thx,
Robert

Robert- filter is actually a screen on these trannies (at least the 442 and 343 for sure) so no need for replacement. Just remove and clean.

just on a side issue, when changing from dino to synthetic, how important is it to do a full change, or can this be done over several changes ?

You can go either route, the fluids are compatible.

My $0.02, if I were changing over I'd do the complete swap at once. You will have a partial dino mix in there for some time.

Change 1: 33% syn
Change 2: 56% syn
Change 3: 70% syn
Change 4: 80% syn
Change 5: 87% syn
Change 6: 91% syn
Change 7: 94% syn
Change 8: 96% syn

Assumes an A-343 with 12 quart system and 4 quarts per drain/re-fill.

Either a name brand mineral or good quality synthetic will work well in the tranny. Synthetics will provide more consistant shifting across wide temperature ranges as well as an extra margin of protection when used under heavy loads (i.e. heavy off roading or towing where you are putting lots of power through the tranny for extended periods). Just by changing the fluid every 15-30k miles, you are ahead of 98% of the people out there.

I'm running Redline ATF. Everything else is Amsoil. I have documentation of an increase in MPGs when my dad switched to the Redline. I've continued with the Redline just because he started it. $11.95/quart. I also recently switched my PS to Redline. WOW! That made a huge difference. No more squeels or groaning under heavy turning.

castrol dexron III on my '93 /247,000+mi .
