Picked up this 97 recently. She sat for a long time before I got it. Previous owner claims to have replaced the head gasket. Problem is she knocks bad. Sounds like it could be top end. What do yall think?

sounds like a diesel... I'd start by pulling the valve cover off to see what condition the cams are in and verify that you don't have a broken or stuck valve.
