What tires are you running on your 60?

Currently sitting on Kenda Klever RT 33x9.5x15 on FJ40 wheels and love the setup. I'm looking into my crystal ball, however, and I keep seeing 35s (after some futzing with various gear-containing things).

I know a few people are running the Kanatis and other 35x15 tires ... how bad is the body roll while street driving with all that sidewall? Are you blowing beads when you're deflated on a trail? Any other disadvantages? I'm not after Swampers or other bias ply tires, I'll get radials. I know 16" and especially 17" open up tire choices, so limited selection is a drawback to retaining 15s. I'm moreso asking about road manners though.

@mattressking @POTATO LAUNCHER are you on 35s? @timmbuck2 your 40 is running 35x15 I think - I should drive by and look.

Both my 60 and my 40 are on 35-12.50 X 15 Mickey Thompson tires, have been for many years now. I didn't notice a huge difference is sidewall flex or excessive body roll after install on the 60. I still run about 35psi on road and 18-25 psi offroad. On road behavior is not that much different for me. OffRoad there is a large difference in clearance. Trail obstructions are easier because of the circumference difference. On paper it doesn't seem like much but real world seat of your pants its fairly obvious.
One thing to keep in mind is both of my rigs are swapped with fairly healthy V8's. Your Mighty 2F would feel a lack of power unless you re-gear it to say 4/88 to get back to stock type runout.

35s for me would involve an H55 and t-case gears with lower low & high range. I have 4.11s in the diffs already. I've typed the math into online gear calculators 100 times at this point and keep scheming. Final ratio in first gear would be lower than what I currently have, gears 2/3/4 would be nearly identical, and of course I'd add the overdrive 5th gear. The underdriven t-case gears essentially take me from 4.11 to about 4.75 in high range.

@HemiAlex I'm over here making plans.

That would be a great alternative Jim. Better low range is always better with the way you use your 60.

I've run these tires:

  • 255/85R16 BFG KM2 on 16x6 trailer rims
  • 29826469311_d54800fb04_o.webp

  • 255/85R16 Toyo MT on 70-series rims
  • IMG_E1309.webp

  • 285/75R16 Cooper AT3 XLT on 70-series rims
  • 2023-04-14.webp
By far, I preferred the look of the Toyo MTs because I really love skinny tires. Since my 60 is no longer my expedition vehicle, I've switched to the Coopers. My 60 is now my daily driver, and I mainly use it for light off-roading. They ride smoothly and are fairly quiet.

I feel that the Toyos wore out prematurely despite the good care and maintenance I gave them.
